HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers offense is on a roll, defeats Shasta 17 - 6

American River College has spent at least 13 hours on a bus in the last two days, and it has worked wonders for the beavers offense.  One day after defeating Mission College 10-0 on 16 hits in Santa Clara, A.R.C. tallied 19 more hits and scored 17 runs in defeating Shasta College in Redding on Wednesday.  Sophomores Cameron Bennett (Rio Linda) and Colton Freeman (El Camino) led the way with 4 hits apiece.  Sophomores Steve Mercado (Antelope), Alex Gaskin (Jesuit) and Dalton deVries (Oakmont) chipped in with 3 RBI apiece.

The Beavers got out to an early lead, scoring once in the first thanks to a couple of Shasta errors, then adding four runs in the 2nd, with RF Alex Gaskin lifting a double to center to drive in two that the Shasta centerfielder lost in the sun.  Freshman P/DH Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) then drove his team leading 6th double on the season into the left center gap to score Gaskin.   Shasta fought back, scoring four in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd on a Colton Freeman throwing error with two outs that allowed two runs to score.  The Beavers tied the game then retook the lead in the 5th inning when freshman C Matt Elliott (Oakmont) grounded out to first with the bases loaded.  2B Steve Mercado later singled with 2 outs to drive in a pair, and Broadbent walked two batters later with the bases loaded.  A.R.C. added three in the 7th inning, with the big blow being a Dalton deVries double to left with two outs.  The game was still reasonably close in the 9th as the Beavers added 5 runs on 6 hits to put the game away.  CF Justin Jordan (Folsom) added a bases loaded two run double with two outs to finish the scoring.

Kirby Broadbent picked up his first collegiate win, scattering four hits over 7 innings, striking out 7 while walking 5.  LHP Kyle Grant (Burbank) threw a scoreless 8th and 9th and struck out four.

The Beavers travel to Laney College in Oakland on Saturday to face their former Bay Valley Conference foes at 1:00 p.m.
