HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers can't overcome rough start, drop season opener

American River College opened the 2015 season with some great weather but some rough sailing on the mound at Beaver Field on Thursday.  Beaver starter Matt Gunter (Bella Vista) was roughed up for 8 hits in 3+ innings while allowing a career high 6 walks.  The Beavers bullpen was effective as RHP Tommy Balmain (Oakmont) came on in relief to throw 4 scoreless innings.  RHP Kyle Beardsley (Franklin) allowed a run in the 8th inning but struck out the side and lefty Kyle Grant (Burbank) worked a scoreless 9th inning.  At the plate the Beavers had their opportunities, as they had at least one runner on base in every inning.  After being down 6-1 after two innings and 8-2 after 4, they managed to get within striking distance, closing the gap to 8-5 in the 5th after a Matt Elliott (Oakmont) double to right and an RBI groundout by sophomore CF Brandon Raposa (Woodcreek).  The Beavers were unable to score again after having runners on base in each of the last 4 innings.  Seven of the nine starters in the lineup had hits, with freshman DH Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) having a pair of hits, including a double off of the right field fence.  Sophomore 3B Austin Call (Oakmont) also added an RBI double in the 1st inning.
