HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers come up just short versus Delta

Delta College may be undefeated and ranked #1 in Northern California, but the 18th ranked Beavers may have been the better team on the field on Saturday.  A.R.C.'s pitchers allowed just 3 hits, two of them bunts, and just 5 balls reached the outfield grass all day.  But mistakes plagued the team early on which led to three unearned runs.  Delta got on the board in the 2nd inning after a one out walk, Beavers starter Tommy Balmain (Oakmont) bobbled an easy comebacker for an error.  He then balked the runners to 2nd and 3rd.  The next batter then flew out to left which scored the runner from third easily, but A.R.C. LF Jimmy Lunardelli (Oakmont) bobbled the ball getting it out of his glove allowing the runner on second to come around and score.  The Beavers got on the board in the 4th when DH Dalton deVries (Oakmont) singled to left with RF Alex Gaskin (Jesuit) on 2nd.  Head Coach Doug Jumelet was holding Gaskin at third but the Mustang LF bobbled the ball for an error which allowed Gaskin to score.  The Mustangs batted around in the 5th inning, scoring three times without getting a ball out of the infield.  Balmain hit the leadoff batter.  The next batter bunted right back to Balmain, who was slow in getting to the ball allowing the batter to beat the throw to first.  The next batter also bunted, this time down the third base line where Balmain fielded it, but did not make a throw, allowing everyone to be safe, loading the bases.  Balmain then walked the next batter, bringing in a run.  After going 2-0 on the following hitter, the Beavers brought in lefty Kyle Grant (Burbank) who struck out the batter on three pitches.  Grant however, did hit the next batter, bringing in another run.  The next batter then hit a pop up to 2nd for an infield fly rule out, but 2B Steve Mercado (Antelope) lost it in the sun and the ball fell allowing the runner on 3rd to score.

The Beavers threatened in the 8th after an Alex Gaskin triple with one out, but 1B Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) lined out to first and deVries struck out to end the inning.  The Beavers made it interesting in the 9th after James Boitano (Argonaut) was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day and third time in the series.  Sophomore Austin Call (Oakmont) then singled through the left side.  After pinch hitter Christian Savage (Cosumnes Oaks) flew out to center, sophomore 3B Colton Freeman hit a sharp grounder to third that was mishandled by the Delta 3B, however Boitano was thrown out at the plate on a close play.  SS Cameron Bennett (Rio Linda) followed up with a triple down the left field line to score two, making the score 5-4.  After a Steve Mercado walk put the winning run on base, Alex Gaskin flew out to deep center to end the game.  The Beavers out-hit the Mustangs 7-3 on the day.
