Beavers come from behind to get their first win of the season

Beavers come from behind to get their first win of the season

American River College used an 8th inning rally to come from behind and defeat the upstart Shasta College Knights 6-3 at Beaver Field on Thursday.  The Beavers got off to a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning thanks to an RBI groundout by SS Jared Biggs (Del Campo) and a run scoring single to left by sophomore 1B Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont).  The Beavers were lucky to be up 2-0 at the time, as Shasta had the bases loaded with no outs in the 2nd inning off of sophomore starter Tommy Balmain (Oakmont)  With nobody out the Knights catcher lofted a fly ball to center which appeared to be deep enough to score the runner from third and advance the runner from 2nd.  In what turned out to be a crazy triple play, the Beavers appealed that both runners left early, and won each appeal, meaning that three outs were recorded on the play and no runs scored, for a triple play.

Shasta did manage to score in the 4th inning thanks to a double play that scored a run.  Balmain was solid through 5 innings, then struggled a bit in the 6th, allowing a one out double, then walking the next batter.  After a two out hit batter, Shasta DH Donald Roethler doubled just over the outstretched glove of 3B Robert Contreras (Antleope) to put Shasta up 3-2.

The Beavers bats remained quiet until the 8th when Shasta reliever Seth Pigg walked A.R.C. CF Cade Parker (Yreka).  Robert Contreras then singled to right and advanced to second on the throw as Parker made it to third.  SS Jared Biggs then laced a single to center to score both runners and give the Beavers the lead.  After Biggs was caught stealing, DH Tyler Swank (Del Campo) walked and advanced on a pair of wild pitches.  C Matt Elliott (Oakmont) then singled to right to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead.  2B Mike Hatfield (Del Campo) bunted for a single, then LF Taylor Angley-Holman (Enterprise) walked to bring up RF Matt Hall (Antelope).  Hall also walked to drive in his first collegiate run.  He recorded his first hit earlier in the game.

Freshman Ian Codina (Oakmont) faced just three batters in the 9th to pick up his first collegiate save.  RHP Tyler McCombs (Antelope) pitched a scoreless 8th inning to notch his first collegiate win.  The Beavers get right back on the field tomorrow against Feather River College at 1:00 p.m. at Beaver Field.  The Beavers will then travel to Redding to face Shasta College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
