Beavers drop another 1-run game, miss chances to score

American River College fell to 2-4 on the season, with all four losses coming by one run.  Solano College defeated A.R.C. 6-5 at beaver Field on Tuesday.  The Beavers had multiple chances to score once again, including bases loaded with one out in the 4th inning, bases loaded with 2 outs in the 7th, 1st and 3rd with two outs n the 8th, and 2nd and 3rd with one out in the 9th.  The Beavers defense was uncharacteristically shaky, especially sophomore 1B Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) who missed a couple of opportunities to pick balls in the dirt and made a crucial error on a ground ball in the 7th inning that led to a pair of Falcon runs.

The Beavers got a quality start from LHP Kurt Johnson (Royal) in his first career start, as he threw 5 innings, allowing 2 runs, with both runs coming in the 5th inning.  Sophomore RHP Tommy Balmain (Oakmont) took the loss, allowing three runs in relief, but none of the runs were earned.

A.R.C. scored three times in the 4th to take an early lead thank to a bases loaded hit by pitch from C Matt Elliott (Oakmont), a bases loaded walk from RF Micah Gunter (Valley Christian) and an infield single from CF Cade Parker (Yreka).  That was all they could muster in that inning though, as 2B Robert Contreras (Antelope) flew out too shallow to right to score Elliott, and SS Jared Biggs (Del Campo) flew out to end the rally.

The Beavers got a leadoff single in the 9th from DH Tyler Swank (Del Campo), followed by a sac bunt by Elliott that was misplayed, allowing the Beavers runners at 1st and 2nd.  Sophomore Taylor Angley-Holman (Enterprise) laid down a pinch-hit sac bunt to move the runners up to 2nd and 3rd with one out, but Parker and Contreras struck out to end the game.

The Beavers go on the road for four of the next five games, including a pair of games in Salinas at Hartnell College this weekend.
