Beavers win ugly against Laney

Beavers win ugly against Laney

American River College managed to give away another lead in the 7th inning on Tuesday, yet managed to come back and win the game in the 10th inning 4-3 against Laney College at Beaver Field.  It was the 3rd extra inning game of the year for A.R.C., but it was the first extra frame win of the year for the team.  Laney opened the scoring in the 1st thanks to a dropped fly ball in center by sophomore OF Justin Jordan (Folsom), followed by a walk and a single off of starter Kurt Johnson (Royal).  The Beavers had a chance to tie the game in the first but SS Jared Biggs (Del Campo) was not able to drive in 2B Robert Contreras (Antelope) from third with one out, and 3B Brayden Gomez (Bella Vista) flew out to end the inning.

The Beavers took the lead in the 4th inning after 1B Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) and Gomez opened the frame with singles.  LF Mike Hatfield (Del Campo) then bunted to move the runners over, and the throw by Laney's pitcher sailed into right field for an error, allowing Broadbent to score.  It was the pitchers second throwing error of the game on a bunt.  DH Tyler Swank (Del Campo) then hit a sac fly to left-center to score Gomez and give the Beavers the lead.

A.R.C. added to the lead in the 6th after Gomez doubled and was bunted to 3rd by Hatfield, when C Joaquin Sequeira (Antelope) singled to right center.  The Beavers let Laney right back in to the game though thanks to three errors in the 7th inning, two by the shortstop Biggs.  The errors led to a pair of unearned runs off of reliever Tommy Balmain (Oakmont) who entered the game in the 7th.  Freshman Tyler McCombs (Antelope) came on in relief of Balmain to get a double play ball to end the threat.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th when Kirby Broadbent laced a one out single to left, one of his three hits on the day.  The next batter, Brayden Gomez, lined a single to right which kicked off the right fielders glove, allowing Broadbent to score all the way from first for the Beavers first walk-off win of the season.  Gomez also added three hits on the day.

Of all the seven runs that scored on the day, only one was earned.  Freshman Ian Codina (Oakmont) picked up his first collegiate win of the season, finishing off the 9th inning for McCombs, then throwing a scoreless 10th inning.  The Beavers are at home again on Thursday against 7th ranked Mission College.
