Beavers split with top-ranked CRC

Beavers split with top-ranked CRC

American River College split the first two games of their three-game season series, winning the first game 10-3 in the continuation of the halted game from last Thursday, then dropped the regularly scheduled game 5-3.  The Beavers started the day leading 5-2 in the bottom of the 4th inning and wasted little time extending the lead, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th.  The big blow was a two run double from CF Justin Jordan (Folsom) who ended up 4x5 on the day with a pair of doubles.  Tyler Swank (Del Campo) also had a good day, going 5x5 at the plate with an RBI.  RHP Tommy Balmain (Oakmont) got the win despite struggling with command, as he walked 4 in just an inning and 2/3 of work.  Freshman BJ Marshall (Valley Christian) came on and threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

In the 2nd game CRC scored in the top of the first without a hit.  Leadoff hitter Devin Pettingill walked off of SO Dillon Bowers (Dripping Springs, TX), then stole 2nd and 3rd.  He scored on a little squibbed hit off the end of the bat by Andrey Gregory to put the Hawks up 1-0.  It wa only the 3rd run scored off the Beavers in the first inning in 17 games.  The Beavers answered right back though, as 3B Brayden Gomez (Bella Vista) drove in Beavers leadoff hitter Cade Parker (Yreka) in much the same way, a little ground ball to first, to tie the game.  The Beavers then took the lead on a two run single to right by DH Tyler Swank.

The Beavers could not keep up the momentum though as CRC loaded the bases in the 4th with no outs and scored a pair of runs.  They did the same thing in the 5th to score a couple more and go up 5-3.  Dillon Bowers had thrown just 44 pitches through the first 3 innings, then threw a combined 63 in the 4th and 5th innings.  Freshman Tyler McCombs (Antelope) threw three scoreless innings and freshman Ian Codina (Oakmont) worked a scoreless 9th, but the Beavers only got two hits after the 3rd inning.

Both teams are 1-1 in BIG 8 Conference play and will play the rubber match of the season series at CRC on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
