Beavers sloppy again, split series with Sierra

Beavers sloppy again, split series with Sierra

For the second game in a row the American River College pitching staff and defense was sloppy in a 9-3 loss to Sierra College at Beaver Field.  The road team won all four games in the series.  A.R.C. had a chance to get on top early after sophomore Brayden Gomez (Bella Vista) doubled to left in the first inning to put runners at 2nd and 3rd.  Sophomore Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) popped up to short and freshman DH Tyler Swank (Del Campo) grounded out to 2nd to end the threat in the first.

Sierra got on freshman LHP Kurt Johnson (Royal) in the 2nd inning after a pair of walks and a wild pitch was followed by a two out single to left to score both runners.  The ball got under the glove of LF Matt hall (Antelope) and rolled all the way to the fence allowing the hitter to get to 3rd, but he did not end up scoring.  Sierra added a solo home run off Johnson in the 3rd to make the score 3-0.

Johnson walked the first batter of the 4th inning, his 6th walk of the game and was replaced by freshman Micah Gunter (Valley Christian)  who promptly hit the first batter he faced.  After a wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases with one out, Gunter educed what looked like would be an inning ending double play, but 2B Robert Contreras' (Antelope) throw to first was dropped by 1B Taylor Angley-Holman (Enterprise), who had replaced Broadbent., allowing two runs to score.  Sierra would add a couple of more runs in the 5th off of freshman Craig Broadman (Arcata) who worked one inning and allowed three hits.

The Beavers managed to get runners on base in 7 of the 9 innings but could not muster any runs until the 8th when C Mitchell Brill (Woodcreek) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and freshman LF Matt Hall (Antelope) walked with the bases loaded, his 5th walk in the past two games.  A.R.C. added a run in the 9th when sophomore Matt Elliott (Oakmont) singled to score

Robert Contreras, who had walked to lead off the inning.

Brayden Gomez had four hits on the day, including two doubles.

The Beavers will now travel to Delta College on Friday to meet the Delta College Mustangs, who are ranked #3 in Northern California.  Game time is 2:30 p.m.
