Beavers take game one from Modesto 4-3

American River College finished off the week taking two out of three games with a 4-3 win over Modesto JC on Saturday.  With the win, the Beavers improved to 9-8 on the road this season.  The game started as a pitcher's duel, with the first 4 innings being completed in about 50 minutes.  The Beavers had a couple of runners in scoring position early, but could not get a run on the board.  Modesto scored in the 2nd inning off of Beavers starter Andrew Wiesenfarth (Rio Americano) thanks to three singles.  The Beavers got on the board in the 5th after DH Tyler Swank (Del Campo) hustled to reach on a ball that was bobbled by Modesto's first baseman.  After he was bunted over to 2nd, CF Justin Jordan (Folsom) hit a ground ball to short that went right through the shortstops legs, allowing swank to score.  The Beavers took the lead in the top of the 6th when Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) doubled down the left field line, then scored when he was hit in the back by a throw from the shortstop that ricocheted down the left field line.

Modesto tied the game in the bottom half of the 6th however, on a one out single off of Wiesenfarth.  He worked his way out of a 1st and 3rd, one out jam by inducing a pop-up to 2nd, then giving way to reliever Tommy Balmain (Oakmont) who kept his head when Modesto tried to run a trick play, but the run was cut down at the plate.

The Beavers scored again in the 7th to regain the lead after C Matt Elliott (Oakmont) doubled to left center, then was brought in on a two out single to center by 2B Robert Contreras (Antleope).  Modesto tied the game in the bottom of the 8th off of reliever Ian Codina (Oakmont) who appeared as if he was going to get out of the inning, but a high chopper to short with two outs was misplayed by SS Jared Biggs (Del Campo) but ruled as a single.

A.R.C. plated the game winning run in the top of the 9th after Justin Jordan singled with two outs then stole second.  RF Cade Parker (Yreka) then singled to left to score Jordan.  The Pirates did not go down easy though, as their CF Mason Washington doubled down the right field line off of Codina.  It was Washington's third hit of the day.  After a groundout to 2nd moved Washington up to 3rd with one out, Codina got the next batter to pop up to first, then struck out the final batter to ice the win for the Beavers.

The two teams will play game two of the series at Beaver Field on Tuesday at 2:30.  It will be the Beavers final home game of the season.
