HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers take down West Valley again, 5-2

Beavers take down West Valley again, 5-2

American River College defeated West Valley College 5-2 at Beaver Field on Saturday to complete the two game series sweep.  Sophomore starting pitcher Kurt Johnson (Royal) worked out of several jams and got some more timely defense to hold the Vikings to one run through 5 innings.  Sophomore LHP Andrew Fuentes (Pioneer) threw two innings, allowing a single run in the 7th, and sophomore RHP Craig Broadman (Arcata) had a three-up, 3-down 8th inning.  Sophomore closer Ian Codina (Oakmont) finished the game by striking out a pair in the 9th inning for his first save of the year.  Just like on Friday, the Beavers got down early, as West Valley scored in the top of the 3rd, but the Beavers came right back and took the lead on Sonny Ledford's (Rio Americano) two run double to left with two outs.  A.R.C. increased the lead thanks to some help from West Valley in the 5th inning.  After freshman SS Will Floyd (Rocklin) drew a one out walk, sophomore 1B Tyler Swank (Del Campo) reached on a fielder's choice.  Sophomore DH Alex Dodd (River City) then singled to right, moving Swank to second.  Freshman 3B Sonny Ledford then hit a chopper to short, but the shortstops throw bounced and got away from the first baseman, allowing Swank to score from second.  Sophomore CF Cade Parker (Yreka) then was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Freshman LF Justin Hanlin (Whitney) then hit a sharp ground ball to short which was misplayed and Dodd scored from third and Ledford scored from second on a close play at the plate.

A.R.C. managed just three hits on the day,, but only allowed 4 hits to West Valley.  Sonny Ledford made some outstanding defensive plays at third over the course of both games allowing the Beavers to take two from West Valley.  The Beavers play Shasta College at A.R.C. in a double header on Saturday, the 4th of February.
