HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers pull one out of the hat, top Feather River 6-5

Sonny Ledford

American River College fell behind early but managed to score twice in the bottom of the 8th to come from behind and beat the 13th ranked Feather River College Golden Eagles 6-5.  The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was moved up to Wednesday to try and beat the rain.  Feather River jumped on sophomore starter Micah Gunter (Valley Christian) early, scoring three in the top of the first, but Gunter and four other relievers would settle down and allow just two runs, one earned the rest of the way.  A.R.C. responded to the Golden Eagles hot start by getting two of the runs back in the bottom of the first.  The first run scored when sophomore 1B Tyler Swank (Del Campo) singled in freshman SS Will Floyd (Rocklin) who reached on his first hit of the year.  After sophomore DH Alex Dodd (River City) reached on a wild pitch/strikeout, CF Cade Parker (Yreka) hit a chopper to short that Feather River couldn't turn into a double play which allowed Swank to score.

Feather River added a run in the top of the 4th, but again the Beavers came right back and scored twice in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game.  Freshman LF Justin Hanlin (Whitney) doubled off of the left field fence to open the 4th, then was bunted over to 3rd by freshman 2B Scotty Henrichs (Granite Bay).  Sophomore C Joaquin Sequeira (Antelope) then doubled down the right field line to score Hanlin.  Sequeira's double was misplayed by the right fielder to allow him to move to third, and he then scored on an 0-2 single to center by Freshman RF Justin Bejarano (Elk Grove) to tie the game.

Freshman RHP Freddy May worked a scoreless 6th inning, but then hit a little bit of trouble in the 7th when the leadoff hitter reached on a throwing error by Floyd, his first of the season.  The next batter walked on a couple of close pitches, which led to sophomore Craig Broadman (Arcata) coming on in relief.  After a stolen base, Broadman got a double play ball, but the runner from third scored to give Feather River the lead.

Tyler Swank led off the 8th with his 4th hit of the day, a single to center.  Alex Dodd then singled down the left field line, but the ball was mishandled by the left fielder, allowing Swank to score from first and sending Dodd to second.  He was then pinch ran for by freshman Blake Spencer (Rio Americano).  After Cade Parker walked, freshman Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) was called upon to bunt the runners over, which he did but the throw to first was muffed allowing the Beavers to load the bases.  After a Scott Henrichs pop-up, Joaquin Sequeira lined out to right, but it was deep enough for Spencer to score easily from third.

Sophomore Ian Codina (Oakmont) came on in the 9th and struck out a pair, but he did allow a walk and a hit to have runners on the corners with two outs.  The Feather River batter hit a sharp line drive down the third base line which was snagged out of mid-air by a diving Sonny Ledford (Rio Americano) to seal the win for the Beavers.

A.R.C. is scheduled to play a doubleheader at home against Shasta College on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m., weather permitting.
