HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers take two from Shasta

Matt Clarke

American River College is off to a 5-0 start after sweeping a doubleheader from Shasta College at Beaver Field on Saturday.  The rain held off long enough to get the games going, and A.R.C. took full advantage, winning the first game 21-5, while taking the nightcap 5-0.  In the first game the Beavers scored in all 8 innings that they hit, with freshman 2B Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) setting a school record with 6 runs scored.  Sophomore 1B Tyler Swank (Del Campo) had 5 RBI while freshman 3B Sonny Ledford (Rio Americano) had 7.  Sophomore LHP Andrew Wiesenfarth (Rio Americano) improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

Game 2 was a much different game, as the Beavers used pitching and defense to hold down the Knights as A.R.C. won 5-0.  Sophomore LHP Kurt Johnson threw 7.1 innings and struck out 8, as the Beavers pitching staff faced just one batter over the minimum for the game.  The game was scoreless through 3 innings when sophomore CF Cade Parker (Yreka) hit a chopper to short and beat out the throw from second on a potential double play to score Tyler Swank who had led off with a single.  The score stayed 1-0 until the 7th when the Beavers loaded the bases with no outs.  Freshman RF Justin Bejarano (Elk Grove) hit a sharp ground ball to the third baseman, who threw home to get the force out.  From there, the catchers throw to first base sailed into right field allowing C Joaquin Sequeira (Antelope) and Scott Henrichs (Granite Bay) to score to put the Beavers up 3-0. Bejarano raced all the around to third on the play, then scored when Sonny Ledford blooped a single into short left field for an RBI.  After Ledford was picked off and there were two outs, SS Will Floyd (Rocklin) singled, then moved up to third on a pair of passed balls.  Tyler Swank then hit a chopper to short and beat it out to score Floyd and put the Beavers up 5-0.

A.R.C. will now get a couple of days off before heading south to Hartnell College in Salinas for single games on Friday and Saturday, their first road games of the season.
