Beavers improve to 9-0 with win over Butte

American River College improved to what is believed to be a school best start to the season, 9 wins in a row, with a 5-4 win over 19th ranked Butte College at Beaver Field on Wednesday.  Butte won the Golden Valley Conference last season.  Butte got off to an early lead, scoring a single run in the 3rd inning off of sophomore LHP Andrew Fuentes (Pioneer), who made his first start of the season.  Butte added a pair of runs in the 4th inning, the second on a technicality as freshman RF Justin Bejarano (Elk Gove) made a diving catch in right with runners on 1st and 2nd.  Both runners were off on the crack of the bat with one out, and after Bejarano made the catch, the Beavers threw to first to double off the runner, but the runner from 2nd had already crossed the plate, allowing the run to score.  Down 3-0, the Beavers answered right back as freshman LF Justin Hanlin (Whitney) tripled to left, then was knocked in by a double to left by sophomore C Joaquin Sequeira (Antelope).  A.R.C. tied the game in the 5th on a pair of runs, the first driven in by a sac fly from sophomore DH Alex Dodd (River City), the second scoring on a wild pitch.  The Beavers then took the lead in the 6th after Hanlin singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI single by freshman 2B Matt Clarke (Bella Vista).  Butte tied the game in the 8th off of closer Ian Codina (Oakmont) who allowed just his 2nd hit of the season, a single to right.  The runner stole second and the ball got away from SS Will Floyd (Rocklin) and rolled into CF allowing the runner to get to third.  As CF Cade Parker (Yreka) went to pick the ball up, he briefly bobbled it and the runner raced home and scored.

The Beavers took the lead for good in the bottom of the 8th however, scoring off of RHP Taylor Greene, who hd shut the team out last season.  Freshman 3B Sonny Ledford (Rio Americano) chopped an infield single to short, then advanced to 2nd on a groundout by Hanlin.  Joaquin Sequeira then laced a sharp groundball to right scoring Ledford.  It was Sequeira's 3rd hit of the game.

Ian Codina worked a clean 9th inning, tallying 5 strikeouts in his 2 innings of work for his first win of the season.  Freshman Greysen Pulsipher (Cosumnes Oaks) threw three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit.

The Beavers and Roadrunners are scheduled to continue their series on Friday at Butte College in Oroville, weather permitting.
