HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers win streak comes to an end

Fred May

American River College's season opening 9 game win streak is over.  Butte College came in Saturday to Beaver Field for a double-header and swept the Beavers 8-1 and 14-4.  In the first game the Beavers defense was uncharacteristically shoddy, as the team made a season high 4 errors and had several other plays that the Beavers were accustomed to making.  Sophomore Micah Gunter (Valley Christian) got hit around a little, but was the victim of the defense not making some plays that it normally does.  Offensively the Beavers had some opportunities to score, but Butte pitcher Taylor Greene handled A.R.C. for the second year in a row.  Last season he shut out the Beavers, this year he allowed one run through 7 innings.  A.R.C. also struck out 10 times in the game.

Game 2 did not go any better, as the Roadrunners touched sophomore LHP Kurt Johnson for 6 runs through 5 innings.  Again, the Beavers offense had opportunities to stay in the game, but failed to capitalize on the them.  A.R.C. did have four doubles in the game, one each by 2B Matt Clarke (Bella Vista), SS Will Floyd (Rocklin), DH Tyler Swank (Del Campo) and 3B Sonny Ledford (Rio Americano).

The Beavers are scheduled to travel to Oakland on Tuesday to play Laney College at 2:00 p.m., weather permitting.
