HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers lose heartbreaker to Delta 4-3 in 11 innings

Beavers lose heartbreaker to Delta 4-3 in 11 innings

Just two days after losing 11-0, the American River College baseball team got back to playing fundamentally sound baseball and took top-ranked Delta College into the 11th inning before falling 4-3.  Sophomore RHP Micah Gunter (Valley Christian) threw extremely well, scattering 10 hits over 9 innings while inducing Delta hitters to hit into three double plays.  The Beavers had a chance to get on top early as sophomore 1B Alex Dodd (River City) singled up the middle in the first with two outs but freshman 2B Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) was gunned down on a close play at the plate.  Clarke ended up with three hits on the day as well as a walk and a hit by pitch.  Delta did manage to get the lead in the 3rd inning, scoring once, then adding a pair of runs in the 4th to go up 3-0.  It took until the 7th before A.R.C. could get on the board but freshman 3B Sonny Ledford (Rio Americano) got it done by singling to center to drive in two.  Freshman DH Justin Hanlin (Whitney) evened the score with a towering solo home run to center, his second HR of the year.  The Mustangs threatened to end the game in the 10th as they had runners at 1st and 3rd with one out but freshman RHP Freddy May (Folsom) got an inning ending double play to send the game to the 11th.  The next frame did not go the Beaves way however as may walked the leadoff hitter.  The next batter bunted and May had a chance to get the runner at 2nd but his throw was high and just tipped off the glove of SS Will Floyd (Rocklin).  After an intentional walk May struck out the next batter to give the beavers a shot at another double play, but his first pitch hit the Delta batter forcing in the game winning run.

The two teams finish their series on Saturday at Beaver Field at 1:00 p.m.
