HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers bullpen falters again, blows lead in the 9th

Beavers bullpen falters again, blows lead in the 9th

The American River College baseball team has had some issues in their bullpen recently and those woes continued on Tuesday.  The Beavers used some timely hitting and a key error by Diablo Valley College to take an 8-6 lead into the 9th, but the several relievers couldn't hold the lead and DVC exploded for 8 runs in the 10th inning to defeat A.R.C. 16-8.  A.R.C. had DVC down 2 with two outs in the 9th inning and runners at 1st and 2nd, but a pair of two out hits tied the game for the Vikings.  The 10th inning turned into a disaster, as the Beavers used every pitcher who was not a starter, and still allowed six runs before recording an out in the 10th.  Sophomore Andrew Fuentes (Pioneer) faced three batters, issuing a walk, two wild pitches and a pair of hits before giving way to sophomore RHP BJ Marshall (Valley Christian).  Marshall walked his first batter, then allowed a double and a single.  Freshman LHP Chris Martin (Elk Grove) then came on and walked his first batter, then tripped while fielding a bunt.  After a strikeout he allowed 2 more singles to give DVC 21 hits on the day.

The pitching was not solely to blame though, as the defense committed a season high 6 errors, three by freshman SS Will Floyd (Rocklin) and two by 2B Matt Clarke (Bella Vista).  The defense however did record three outs on the bases and turn two double plays on the day.

Offensively the Beavers did enough to win, scoring 8 runs with sophomore 1B Alex Dodd (River City) leading the way with three hits and an RBI.  Freshman 3B Sonny Ledford (Rio Americano) had a pair of hits and drove in the tying run in the 8th with a single up the middle.  Will Floyd also had three hits, an RBI and a stolen base on the day.

The two teams play on Thursday at DVC at 2:30 p.m.
