HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers even up series with Modesto

Beavers even up series with Modesto

American River College took advantage of 5 Modesto errors to bounce back from a rough game on Monday and even the series at a game apiece.  Freshman RHP Collin Carriger (Bella Vista) was solid on the mound, scattering three hits over 8 innings to hold the host Pirates in check.  One of the hits he allowed was a bunt single to the first batter of the game.  The Beavers took the lead in the top of the 3rd inning after C Nick Huddlestun (Rocklin) walked to lead off the inning.  He moved to 2nd on a wild pitch then scored when 2B Christian Murua (Grant) hit a ground ball to the Modesto second baseman who misplayed it, allowing Huddlestun to score.  Murua came around to score after 1B Lane Field (Whitney) singled up the middle and SS Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) hit a sac fly to center.  The Beavers added two more in the 4th after LF Ray Henry (Colfax) hit one off the cap of the bat, giving the ball some funny spin which caused it to be misplayed by Modesto's first baseman.  Henry stole second, then CF Logan Hall (Oakdale) walked.  With one out Huddlestun singled to score Henry, then Hall scored on a sac fly by RF Justin Bejarano (Elk Grove) who also added a pair of singles on the day.

But the biggest factor of the day was the pitching by Carriger, who had thrown just 50 pitches through 5 innings.  He gave up a two run homer in the 6th to bring the score to 4-2 but he settled down to cruise through the 8th inning.  Sophomore Freddy May (Folsom) worked an uneventful 9th inning to pick up the save.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Friday, weather permitting.
