Beavers win thriller over Folsom Lake

Beavers win thriller over Folsom Lake

The American River College baseball team won for the first time on a Tuesday this year, scoring in the bottom of the 9th to defeat 10th ranked Folsom Lake College 5-4 at Beaver Field.  A.R.C. didn't get their first hit until the 6th inning when freshman Lane Field (Whitney) laced a single to left.  Three Beavers had reached base before that on a pair of walks and an error, but there had been no hits.  Fortunately for the Beavers freshman LHP Sean Miller (Granite Bay) was having one of his best outings of the year, allowing just one unearned run through the first 5 innings.  Folsom Lake did score in the 6th on an unearned run, but in the bottom half, after 2B Christian Murua (Grant) walked, Field singled, then LF Ray Henry (Colfax) moved both runners up with a sac bunt.  DH Blake Spencer (Rio Americano) then singled up the middle to score Murua.  Lane Field was also able to score as Folsom's second baseman in his sliding attempt to keep the ball in the infield kicked the ball into left field.  Folsom regained the lead in the 7th, scoring a pair of unearned runs off of Miller.  A.R.C. came right back and tied it up in the bottom of the 7th on a Christian Murua single to right.  Austin Jacobs (River City) came on in relief of Miller and was sailing along with 2 outs in the 8th when he walked back-to-back hitters.  Freshman Nick Perry (Rio Linda) came on in relief and allowed a single which scored one of the runners but LF Ray Henry threw out the second runner at the plate to end the threat.  The Beavers would tie it back up in the 8th after Field walked with one out and pinch hitter Logan Hall (Oakdale) singled to center that was nearly caught by the diving centerfielder.  After a balk, C Nick Huddlestun (Rocklin) hit a sac fly to center to score Field and tie the game.  Perry worked a scoreless 9th inning leading to the dramatic finish.  Christian Murua led off with a single to left.  As Lane Field was attempting to bunt he was hit by the pitch putting runners at 1st and 2ndRay Henry then attempted to bunt and he too was hit by the pitch to load the bases.  Blake Spencer flew out to shallow center but it was not deep enough to score the runner.  SS Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) then came up and pushed a bunt up the first base line and the throw to the plate was a bit late, allowing Murua to score and give the Beavers their first "walk-off" win of the season.  It was the Beavers first walk-off bunt since Joe Mercer (Carson HS, NV) bunted in the winning run against Sierra College in 2002.

The two teams will meet again on Thursday at Folsom Lake College at 2:30.
