Beavers take down Sac City in game 1

Beavers take down Sac City in game 1

It was one of the sloppiest games of the year, as American River College made 6 errors, 4 in the first 3 innings, yet still managed to hold on for a 6-5 victory in game one of the BIG 8 Conference series against cross-town rival Sacramento City College at Beaver Field on Tuesday.  Freshman LHP Sean Miller (Granite Bay, pictured) picked up his first career win by pitching 6 innings and allowing just three runs despite the shaky defense.  Two of his runs were earned.  Sac City made their share of mistakes as well- 5 of the 6 A.R.C. runs scored were unearned.  Sac City got on top early after a one out single, Sac City's SS Joe McNamara stole second.   Sophomore C Nick Huddlestun's (Rocklin) throw bounced into center field allowing McNamara to advance to third.  The next batter ground out to short allowing the first run to score.   A.R.C. answered right back however, tying the game in the bottom of the first after freshman 1B Lane Field (Whitney) walked and LF Ray Henry (Colfax) singled, sophomore DH Justin Hanlin (Whitney) doubled into the right field corner to score Field.  In the second inning the Beavers took advantage of a couple of Sac City miscues to put four runs on the board.  Sophomore 3B Will Floyd (Rocklin) was hit by a pitch and Huddlestun bunted him over to second.  Sophomore RF Justin Bejarano (Elk Grove) then reached on a throwing error, followed by sophomore 2B Christian Murua (Grant) being hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Lane Field then hit a squibber up the first base line for a run scoring out.  Ray Henry then singled up the middle to plate two more runs followed by Justin Hanlin's 2nd double of the game to score Henry and put the Beavers up 5-1.

Miller would give up a run in the 3rd inning on a run scoring, two out triple.  Sac City would score again in the 4th to make the score 5-3.  A.R.C. got an insurance run in the 6th, and it wound up being an important run.  Will Floyd singled to lead off the inning but he was still at first with two outs.  Christian Murua then bunted for a hit with two outs and the ball was misplayed by the Sac City catcher.  Lane Field then singled to left to score Floyd and pick up his 2nd RBI of the game.

Freshman RHP Nick Perry (Rio Linda) came on in the 7th inning and had a 3-up, 3-down 7th.  The 8th inning was a little hairier though as the first three Sac City batters singled.  Perry was able to get a double play ball which allowed a run to score, then with two outs he got a fly ball down the left field line that Ray Henry could not hold onto for the Beavers 6th error of the game, bringing the score to 6-5.  Sophomore RHP Freddy May (Folsom) came on to pitch the 9th and retired the three Sac City batters he faced, including ending the game on a strikeout.

The two teams will meet again on Thursday at Union Stadium on the campus of Sac City College at 2:30 p.m.
