Beavers take Game 1 at DVC

Beavers take Game 1 at DVC

After missing out on an opportunity to earn a sweep against cross-town rival Sac City College on Saturday the American River College baseball team got back to their winning ways by outlasting Diablo Valley College 6-5 in Pleasant Hill on Tuesday.  Freshman RHP Austin Jacobs (River City, pictured) earned his first collegiate win by throwing 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Sean Miller (Granite Bay).  Miller was cruising along through the first four innings with a 3-0 lead and having faced no more than four batters in an inning when he suddenly lost command in the 5th.  After retiring the leadoff batter he hit the next batter then walked the following two batters to load the bases, along with a wild pitch.  A bloop single to left scored the first run followed by a sac fly to make the score 3-2.  DVC then followed with back-to-back doubles to take a 5-3 lead.  Jacobs then came on in relief and got out of the 5th and threw a scoreless 6th and 7th inning before freshman RHP Nick Perry (Rio Linda) came on to work a scoreless 8th inning.  Sophomore closer Freddy May (Folsom) faced four batters in the 9th to record the save, ending the game on a strikeout.

The Beavers offense had a good day, racking up 12 hits, three of them doubles and adding a triple.  Freshman CF Logan Hall (Oakdale) had a double and a triple on the day.  The Beavers got out early scoring in the 3rd inning as LF Ray Henry (Colfax) grounded out to score RF Justin Bejarano (Elk Grove) from third.  The Beavers added two more in the 4th, the first on Logan Hall's triple, then he scored when SS Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) hit a sac fly to center.

After the Beavers gave up the lead in the 5th they did as they have many times this season after a big inning and responded by scoring twice to re-tie the game.  Logan Hall line a one out double to right and after advancing on a wild pitch he scored on a ground out by Clarke.  Sophomore C Nick Huddlestun (Rocklin) then hit a two out double off of the fence in right and then scored via wild pitch and a passed ball to tie the game.

The game winner came in the top of the 8th when Justin Bejarano hit a pop up to right that the DVC second baseman couldn't keep in his glove and the hustling Bejarano made it to 2nd.  Leadoff hitter Christian Murua (Grant) then laid down a bunt down the third base line which was thrown away, allowing Bejarano to score.  Murua ended up with three hits on the day and Hall, Huddlestun, and 3B Will Floyd (Rocklin) each had two hits.

The two teams will play Thursday at Beaver Field at 2:30 p.m.
