Beavers Split Weekend Series With Pair of Extra Inning Games

After two really well played games at West Valley College over the first weekend of the 2024 season in which the Beavers came away empty handed, the second weekend of the season proved just as exciting.  On Thursday against Shasta College the Beavers were a bit sloppy early with sophomore LHP Jake Morell (Whitney) allowing 8 runs in the first three innings, 3 of them unearned.  The Beavers were down 11-3 in the 6th inning before scoring twice to make the score 11-5.  They then tallied 6 more in the 8th to tie the game going into the 9th inning.  Sophomore RHP Danny Valenze (Whitney) worked a scoreless 9th on 7 pitches to give the Beavers a chance for the win.  After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 9th by freshman DH Jayden Reynolds (Bella Vista) and sophomore 1B Willie Tatum (Grant) was hit by a pitch, sophomore C Duncan Hansen (Del Campo) gave the Beavers their first win of the season, in walk-off fashion no less, with a double just inside the base at third to score Reynolds.  Valenze picked up his first win of the season.

Friday went the opposite direction for ARC.  After sophomore LHP Luke Ostien (Rosemount, MN) allowed a pair of runs in the 2nd inning to visiting Feather River College he settled down to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless through four.  Freshman RHP Joey Guarienti (Vista del Lago) came on in relief and threw four quality innings, allowing just a pair of runs in the top of the 6th.  The Beavers had briefly tied the game in the 5th with the tying run coming on a single by sophomore SS Darin Eales (Bear Creek).  With ARC down 4-2 in the bottom of the 6th the Beavers tallied 4 runs to go up 6-4.  They carried that lead into the 9th when Danny Valenze was called upon to save the game but he didn’t have the same command as he did the night before, as he hit the first three batters he faced to load the bases.  Freshman RHP Randy Payne (Del Campo) came on in relief and got a pair of sacrifice flies to limit the damage but Feather River did manage to tie the game.  Payne held the Golden Eagles scoreless through the 12th inning, during which the Beavers were also held scoreless.  Feather River finally managed to get to Payne in the 13th inning scoring a pair of runs.  The Beaver offense did threaten to tie the game in the bottom of the 13th, getting runners on first and second with two outs for the hot hitting Duncan Hansen (Del Campo) but he was not able to bring the runs in.

The Beavers have a busy week ahead as the play Solano College at Beaver Field on Wednsday, followed by a 1pm start on Thursday against Lassen College.  Friday and Saturday the Beavers head to Salinas for a pair of games against Hartnell College.
