HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Baseball Takes 2 Out of On The Week

Baseball Takes 2 Out of On The Week

American River College won their home game against Lassen College on Thursday 9-2 thanks to solid pitching from RHP Joey Guarienti (Vista del Lago), who earned his first college victory, and some quality at bats from Sophomore C Duncan Hansen (Del Campo) and Sophomore RF Wyatt Winalski (San Juan).  Hansen did not have any hits but drove in a pair of runs and Winalski had two hits, one of which was a two run triple in the 7th inning to put the Beavers up 8-1 at the time.

ARC then went on the road Friday and Saturday for a two game series with Hartnell College in Salinas.  The Beavers dropped game one 9-3 in a game that was much closer than the score would indicate.  The game was tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning when starter Luke Ostien (Rosemount, MN) was taken out with two outs and nobody on base.  The Beavers bullpen then imploded, as Sophomore LHP Jake Morell (Whitney) threw 8 straight balls before giving way to Freshman Jose Vega (Highlands).  Vega’s first two pitches were balls, one of them a passed ball to move the runners up to 2nd & 3rd.  The batter was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a potential force out at the plate or a double play but after ball one to the Hartnell cleanup hitter Vega threw a strike that cleared the left field fence for a grand slam.  Freshman RHP Randy Payne (Del Campo) came on to throw the 8th and he allowed a three run home run to the same hitter, giving him a pair of home runs and 7 RBI on the day.  For the Beavers Sophomore RF Wyatt Bahlke (Woodcreek) had half of the teams hits as he was 3x3 with a double and a walk.

Saturday went much better for ARC as they got down by two runs in the bottom of the first, both runs unearned off of Sophomore LHP Anthony Ocanas (Woodland).  But ARC answered right back tying the game in the 2nd inning when Sophomore SS Brett Griffiths (Jesuit) reached on a two-out error that plated two runs to tie the game.  Hartnell scored in the 5th off of Ocanas to take a 3-2 lead but once again the Beavers answered right back.   Freshman DH Alex Olson (Bella Vista) singled with one out in the top of the 6th, and Bahlke followed up with a two run homer over the left field fence to give ARC its’ first lead, 4-3.  The Beavers tacked on a run in the 7th inning after Sophomore LF Marcus Babauta (St. Mary’s) led off with a walk and later scored on a ground out by C Duncan Hansen.  Sophomore RHP Tyler Moore (Del Campo) came on in relief for Ocanas in the 7th inning with two outs and runners at 1st & 3rd but he got a line out to 2B Darin Eales (Bear Creek) to end the inning. Moore got in a jam in the 9th as Hartnell got the tying run to 3rd and winning run to 2nd with 2 outs but he got a pop-up to shallow right field to end the game.

The Beavers are scheduled for a three game series with Butte College this week, weather permitting, with the Roadrunners coming to Beaver Field on Thursday and Saturday with ARC traveling to Oroville on Friday.
