Beavers Drop Game 2 at West Valley

Beavers Drop Game 2 at West Valley

For the first five innings, game two of American River College’s opening series at West Valley was as well played as the first.  Both teams were making highlight reel defensive plays, hitting the ball hard and getting outstanding outings from their starting pitching.  Things started slipping for the Beavers in the 6th however.  Sophomore left-hander Anthony Ocanas (Woodland) through the first five innings had West Valley on their heels, much as Luke Ostien (Rosemount, MN) did the day before.  Ocanas scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run through five.  The Beavers trailed 3-2 at the time, having scored on freshman C Chris Cecchini’s (Lincoln- Stockton) first career hit, an RBI triple down the right field line and sophomore 2B Darin Eales’ (Bear Creek) first home run of the season- a solo shot- and the first one hit in the newly refurbished Valhalla Stadium.  Ocanas walked the leadoff batter in the 6th and was pulled for freshman Joey Guarienti (Vista del Lago) to make his collegiate pitching debut.  The first batter he faced homered over the left field fence to put the Vikings up 5-2.  He recovered to retire the side after that, but after getting the leadoff batter in the 7th allowed two hits and a walk, along with a balk to bring in three more runs.  Freshman RHP Alex Olson (Bella Vista) relieved Guarienti to finish the 7th.  Sophomore RHP Danny Valenze (Whitney) worked the 9th and allowed a run on a couple of hits and 2 balks.  The Beavers played well throughout the series, as did West Valley.  The Beavers are scheduled to return to action-weather permitting- with their home opener against Shasta College on Thursday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m.
