American River College defense returns to form in commanding win over Fresno City College

November 4, 2013

The No. 1 ranked defense in the state is determined to not allow 27 points on the scoreboard again.

The American River College defense held Fresno City College to 0 points, a first down and 31 yards during the first half of Saturday’s game to help the Northern California No. 2-ranked Beavers defeat the No. 6-ranked Rams 31-7.

After watching division rival San Joaquin Delta College score 27 points the previous week the Beavers defense shut down the Rams only giving up 7 points, 186 yards and 11 first downs.

“When we had to absolutely hold them we came through with it and that’s a testament to our coaches and the way we practice, we practice harder than anyone else so that when we do come to the game it’s easier,” defensive lineman Sione Umufuke said.  “

On three straight plays defensive back Malcolm Scott picked off Rams quarterback Marcus Montero, the first two interceptions were negated by late hits. The third interception occurred with 1:47 left in the first half as Montero attempted to connect with Wide Receiver Brayden Sanchez in the end zone; Scott cut the route and grabbed the ball for his second interception of the day.

“Honestly I was just looking where he (Marcus Montero) was throwing and watching his eyes so I was there when he threw the ball,” Scott said. “He kept throwing my way and he probably thought I was tired but I wasn’t going to give up the play.”

The Beavers got off to a fast start offensively after receiving the opening kickoff, the team moved the ball 76 yards down the field to take a 7-0 lead after wide receiver Tyler Trosin had a 10-yard rushing touchdown on a reverse from running back Drake Tofi. Trosin also scored on an 18-yard reception from quarterback Mike Hicks, which gave ARC a 17-0 lead with 14:46 left in the second quarter.

Tofi rushed for 125 yards on 23 carries. Over the last three games Tofi has averaged 131 yards per game making him the first running back to rush for over 100 yards in three straight games this season.

“It’s all the o-linemen,” Tofi said. “Everything I’m able to do is all because of them.”

FCCs defense gave up 17 points, 227 yards and 15 first downs in the first half of the game and went into halftime trailing 17-0. ARCs offense ended the game with 31 points, 350 yards and 22 first downs.

The Beavers offense also saw freshman quarterback Jake Bist return to action after being sidelined during last week’s game versus SJDC due to a concussion. Bist capped off an 8 play, 65 yard drive by rushing the ball one-yard for a touchdown, scoring the only offensive touchdown in the second half.

“It was great to get out there,” Bist said. “I tried not to worry about my concussion when I was out there because it wouldn’t help the team.”

The Beavers dominated in all aspects of the game including time of possession 33:14 to 26:46. For the second time in three seasons the Beavers are off to a 6-0 start.

“I’m pleased with how they’ve bounced back and how they’ve overcome it’s going to be critical in our continued climb,” head coach Jerry Haflich said. “We try not to focus on the negatives and focus on what is right and what’s good.”

The team’s next game is on the road against Modesto Junior College Nov. 2 at 6 p.m.

We have a new No. 3 on the big board after American River stunned perennial power City College of San Francisco, 34-13. The Beavers forced seven San Francisco turnovers and turned them into 17 points, sacking Rams quarterback Turner Baty five times and forcing him into four interceptions. ARC moved up to No. 3 with the win while San Francisco fell to No. 14 with the loss. Both teams have a bye this week to prepare for their conference schedule.

ARC football stays undefeated

October 19, 2013

Coming off their bye week, the American River College football team led by quarterback Mike Hicks and his five touchdowns, beat division opponent San Joaquin Delta College 50-27 to remain undefeated at 6-0.

“We had a slow start, but we picked it up in the second quarter,” Hicks said.

The first Valley Conference matchup of the season saw Hicks throw two touchdowns, and rush one to help put his team up 21-7 at the end of the first half.

The first score of the game came by way of a 21 play, 98-yard drive by the Mustangs, it lasted 8:10 and took up most of the first quarter.

ARC responded back with 37 unanswered points.

“We got crucial turnovers … we were able to stop them in key moments, and our special teams played their butts off today,” defensive lineman Sione Umufuke said.

ARC wide receiver Tyler Trosin hauled in three touchdown receptions in the game adding to his team lead and giving him 14 all-purpose touchdowns for the season.

Even though the team won, the defense felt they could have played better at times.

“We have a stingy defense and 27 points is a lot … we’ve got to fix things on Monday,” defensive lineman Karmah Yates said.

The 27 points scored against the ARC defense is the most that they have given up to any opponent this season.  One of the touchdowns against the Beavers came against the offense when an interception, by Jonathan Kodama was run back 24-yards for a touchdown.

The touchdown came 13 seconds after a previous SJDC score put the game within reach at 37-21.

“You can’t win a game undisciplined, fortunately we won this game today,” Umufuke said.  “We are the number one defense in the state; we sure gave up a lot today.”

ARC running back Drake Tofi had a pair of touchdowns, one receiving and the other on a 45-yard run that put the game away.

“In the Valley Conference you have to play 60 minutes,” head coach Jerry Haflich said.  “I didn’t like the energy, or the lack thereof.”

The next game for the undefeated ARC football team is Fresno City College on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.

Victory is sweetest when you've known defeat

October 6, 2013

The No. 3 ranked football team American River College capitalized on five first-half turnovers to top the No. 1 ranked team in the state City College of San Francisco 34-13, Saturday at Rams Stadium in San Francisco.

The Beavers defense finished the game with seven turnovers which proved instrumental in the team posting a 31-6 lead over the Rams entering half time.

“We wanted this win not only for us but for coach,” defensive linemen Trevor Jones said. “Coach has wanted this win since he started the program, so this means more than any game up to this moment.”

The last time these two teams met was in the Northern California Championship title game in December which ended with a controversial holding call that negated a game winning touchdown by the Beavers.

“Last year we came here for the NorCal championship game and the way that things ended at that game we weren’t completely satisfied,” running back Drake Tofi said. “We took it upon ourselves, looking at it as unfinished business and we tried to come down here with a good mindset and we said that this is a business trip and we need to take care of the things that we need to do.”

Not much went right for Rams quarterback Turner Baty who turned the ball over a total of six times during the game. Baty had two fumbles recovered by the Beavers, was sacked 5 times, and threw four interceptions, two which were picked up by defensive back Malcolm Scott.

“Honestly, I was just looking the way he (Baty) was throwing and watching his eyes so I was right there at the ball,” Scott said.

The ARC defense which is ranked No.1 in the state also posted their first touchdown of the season after a sack on Baty led to a fumble recovery by defensive linemen Matthew Rashad who took the ball 39 yards for a touchdown.

Coming into the game the Rams averaged 444 yards of offense and 45.5 points per game. The Beavers defense held CCSF to 331 total yards and 13 points.

“We bend but we will not break and that’s very cliché but you know with clichés they’re used because something happens all of the time,” defensive linemen Sione Umufuke said. “With us we gave up a couple of things, had a couple of missed assignments, but then when we had to absolutely get stops we came through with it and that goes to the testament of our coaches and the way we practice.”

ARC’s offense struck first after a handoff from quarterback Jake Bist to running back Tofi was taken 37 yards for a touchdown 18 seconds into the game.  Bist left the game in the fourth quarter after being shaken up on a play. He finished the day with 141 yards, two touchdowns and a fumble.

The ground game was active for the Beavers. Tofi finished the game with 122 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown, becoming the first Beaver to rush for 100 yards since running back Devontae Booker did versus City College of San Francisco in the Northern California Championship game.

“As for the 37-yard run, it was all the (offensive)-linemen. I’m nothing without them. Everything I’m able to do is all because of the o-line,” Tofi said.

Wide receiver Adonis Griffin finished the game with 67 yards including a 17-yard touchdown reception from Bist which put the Beavers up 14-3. Trosin scored the other receiving touchdown on a 5-yard reception giving ARC a 28-6 lead.

For the second time in seven seasons head coach Jerry Haflich and the Beavers have started off the season 5-0.

“Sweet is the right word,” head coach Jerry Haflich said. “It’s so good to climb the mountain; they’ve been the pecking order for so many years. It’s really good for the boys, for the program, for the school and for the fans. Our kids worked really hard and they believed if they put in the work they would have the opportunity to win.”

The Beavers have a bye this upcoming week but will resume play at home versus San Joaquin Delta College Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.

American River College football routs state-ranked No. 1 San Francisco

October 5, 2013

With defense the trademark, state-ranked No. 5 American River College belted national powerhouse and state. No. 1 San Francisco City College 34-13 on Saturday afternoon in the Bay Area, scoring one for every underdog program in the land that had been itching to topple a giant.

"We got one for the little people," ARC coach Jerry Haflich cracked on a jubilant bus ride home. "It's a really big win. This is what we've been working for. It's a pecking order, and a lot of work. San Francisco has been on top for a long time. I'm as proud as I can be. It was one of those victories where you just go, 'Wow!'"

The Beavers (5-0) delivered a "wow" first half, storming to a 31-6 lead to stun the 4-0 Rams, who topped the Beavers 41-36 in the Northern California Community College championship game last December, a contest that ended in controversy.

That unsettling 2012 finish was ancient history heading home on Saturday, though it surely motivated the Beavers heading in.

Jake Bist hit Adonis Griffin for a 17-yard touchdown to give ARC a 14-3 lead and he found Tyler Trosin for a 5-yard touchdown to make it 28-6. Matthew Rashad returned a fumble 39 yards for ARC to make it 21-3 for the Beavers, who also received a 37-yard touchdown run by Drake Tofi.

Malcolm Scott had two of ARC's interceptions. Jordan Carrell and Jacoby Carter also had interceptions for the Beavers, whose defense has been superb all season and recorded six sacks of the Rams.

ARC opened the season with a 40-2 victory over Monterey Peninsula and followed with wins over Sacramento City (34-7), Chabot (33-13) and Santa Rosa (55-21).

Battle of the unbeaten: No. 6 ranked Beavers blow out Santa Rosa Junior College on the road

September 29, 2013

A total of 48 unanswered points by the No. 6 nationally-ranked team AmericanRiverCollege and a 55-21 on-the-road victory over the No. 23 nationally-ranked team Santa Rosa Junior College Friday Sept. 27 will give any fan a reason to ignore the Beavers slow offensive start.

The Beavers trailed 7-0 early in the game after SRJC quarterback Mike Pierson connected with running back K’Lan Anderson on a 31-yard touchdown 8:36 into the first quarter.  After that scoring drive the SRJC Bear Cubs were held scoreless by ARC’s defense until three seconds remained in the third quarter.

ARC’s No. 1 ranked state defense ended the night with four interceptions, three sacks, two forced fumbles recovered by the Beavers, eight tackles for loss and a blocked punt.

“It’s such a blessing,” sophomore defensive lineman Trevor Jones said. “I’m so used to playing on teams where the offense is the powerhouse. But playing for a team where the defense is the powerhouse, it just makes it so fun to come out and play.”

Running back Drake Tofi put the Beavers on the board with 14 seconds left in the first quarter after a 38-yard completion from freshman quarterback Jake Bist to Tofi put the team at their 5-yard line. On the next play Tofi picked up the 5 yards for the team’s first touchdown. Freshman kicker Charlie Vue missed the point after touchdown, leaving the Beavers trailing 7-6 heading into the second quarter.

The Beavers took the lead with 7:45 left in the first half when Bist found freshman wide receiver Adonis Griffin in the end zone for a 5-yard completion.  A hole in SRJC’s defense left sophomore wide receiver Dan Thomas open for a two-point conversion. The Beavers led 14-7 after that play and continued piling on the points.

Bist led the team to eight scoring drives in the first three quarters. Six of the drives resulted in touchdowns while the other two led to field goals. Bist would finish the game by completing 60 percent of his passes for 227 yards, five touchdowns, a two-point conversion and an interception.

“It’s all about being prepared and the coaches’ calling the right plays,” Bist said.

On the receiving end of three of those touchdowns was sophomore wide receiver Tyler Trosin who now has 10 touchdowns in four games and leads the state in touchdown receptions. Trosin finished the night with five receptions for 102 yards.

“It takes a whole team effort,” Trosin said. “It’s not just one guy out there.”

The most important drive of the game arguably happened in the fourth quarter after Pierson drove the Bear Cubs down the field for back-to-back touchdown drives.

ARC’s offense was given the ball with 9:32 left in the fourth quarter and a 48-21 lead. The drive was led by sophomore running back Mark Jenkins who capped the 42-yard drive off with a two-yard rushing touchdown using nearly five minutes of the clock. The Beavers led 55-21 after that possession.

After the touchdown Jenkins ran over to the sideline to thank the offensive linemen whose blocking made it possible for him to score.

“It was very important to thank the (offensive) line; running backs do nothing without the line,” Jenkins said.

The Beavers remain undefeated four weeks into the season after putting together their most complete game offensively and defensively against the Bear Cubs.

“After the first series things started gelling,” head coach Jerry Haflich said. “It’s a lot of fun watching the young kids come together. I thought that Jake (Bist) was tremendous in the passing, Drake Tofi was tremendous, and the offensive line did a fantastic job. Our defense created a lot of turnovers and provided more opportunities and that’s what we said we had to do.”

Oct. 5 the Beavers will be put to the ultimate test in what seems to be the most critical game of the season as they take on the No. 9 ranked team in the nation City College of San Francisco.

The matchup versus CCSF will be an opportunity for the veteran Beavers on the team to exact revenge on the Rams after ARC lost to them in the San Francisco Community College Bowl, which ended the team’s state title hopes last season.

The Oct. 5 match will be held in San Francisco at 1 p.m.

ARCs defense shines versus Chabot College as the Beavers offense gets lost in the rain

September 22, 2013

The American River College 33-13 win over Chabot College Saturday Sept. 21 was a defensive juggernaut featuring a combined total of 7 turnovers and a safety, despite the offensive woes sustained by the Beavers the No. 8 ranked football team in the nation is now 3-0.

Arguably the unsung hero for the Beavers this season has been their defense; they were tested multiple times throughout the game, on a span of four consecutive offensive possessions ARC had back-to-back fumbles recovered by the Chabot, a punt blocked at the Gladiators 18-yard line and an interception. The Gladiators failed to capitalize on the turnovers only scoring one touchdown on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Zach Lujan to wide receiver Jake Isabel.

“We talk all the time about adversity,” ARC football head coach Jerry Haflich said. “As a young team we’re constantly asking them to grow, they were forced to grow up today. I’m extremely proud of their resiliency and their ability to come back. I’m pleased with how they responded to that adversity.”

The Gladiators started the first quarter off strong on the team’s first punt return of the game sophomore safety Michael Stewart took the punt 97-yards for a touchdown followed by the Isabel touchdown reception the Gladiators ended the first quarter with a 13-3 lead, neither team would score in the second quarter.

While the defense came up big for the Beavers once again, the offense struggled to find their momentum. Until a fumbled punt recovered by freshman defensive back Damion Sanders was returned 19-yards with eight minutes left in the third quarter, giving the Beavers its first touchdown of the game.

“It felt great to actually help out my team,” Sanders said. “To actually be a difference in the game it’s great.”

The ARC defense is currently ranked No. 1 in the state of California. The team allows 7.3 points per game, 120.3 total yards, 102 passing yards and 18.3 rushing yards, along with 15 sacks, 6 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries.

“Honestly, we just came together as a team,” Sanders said. “Everything isn’t going to go how it’s planned so we came together and did what we had to do.”

Following the Sanders punt return the Beavers offense was rejuvenated, led by freshman quarterback Jake Bist the team would score 3 more touchdowns. Bist’s first touchdown of the game was a 82-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Tyler Trosin for his seventh touchdown of the season,  this touchdown and the point after touchdown conversion from sophomore kicker Cameron Southward would give the Beavers their first lead of the game.

After taking the lead the Beavers never looked back, Bist would go on to connect with sophomore wide receiver Ference Lang for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one was for 16 yards and another for 20 yards. Bist ended the day with 235 yards, three touchdowns, an interception and a lost fumble.

“We constantly talk about momentum,” Haflich said. “Somebody has got to make a play that’s going to turn it.”

The Beavers next home game is Saturday Oct. 19 versus division rival San Joaquin Delta College at 1 p.m. The team’s next game is Friday Sept. 27 at Santa Rosa Junior College at 7 p.m.

American River College’s offense explodes versus rival Sacramento City College

September 15, 2013

American River College (1-0) hosted their home opener Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. versus longtime rival Sacramento City College (1-0).  The Panthers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over the Beavers. ARC would rally and go on to score 34 unanswered points, the team would hold on to defeat the Panthers 34-7.

After winning the opening coin toss the Panthers deferred the ball to the Beavers. On the third play of ARCs opening drive sophomore quarterback Mike Hicks completed a pass to sophomore wide receiver Nathaniel Smith who en route fumbled the ball. The Panthers would recover the ball and take it down to the 15-yard line.

Following the fumble recovery Panthers freshman quarterback Taylor Laird would run the ball down to the 5-yard line; a defensive off-sides penalty moved the ball to the 3-yard line. The Panthers would finish their only scoring drive of the game with freshman running back Josh Hadley rushing the ball in to the end zone.  Freshman kicker Clarke Ball’s point after touchdown (PAT) was good putting the Panthers up 7-0.

The Beavers first scoring drive of the game started from their 2-yard line. Hicks escaped a near sack in the end zone by completing a 34-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Tyler Trosin. Four plays later Hicks would connect with Trosin again for a 38-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. Sophomore kicker Cameron Southwards PAT was good tying the game 7-7.

The Beavers offense never looked back, later in the second quarter Hicks would connect with Trosin again this time for a 48-yard touchdown reception with 51 seconds left in the first half.

On the Panthers first drive of the second half freshman wide receiver Bobby Garza fumbled the ball, the ball was recovered by freshman defensive linemen Caleb Melton, who took the ball down to the 12-yard line.

“I just came prepared and ready to go,” Melton said.  He would also add a sack in his season debut.

ARCs offense was unable to capitalize in the end zone sending the field goal unit on to the field. Southward would make the 23-yard field goal after missing two field goals in the first half of the game; ARC would lead SCC 17-7.

In the third quarter freshman quarterback Jake Bist would fumble the ball at their 12-yard line, resulting in a fumble Sacramento City College would recover the ball in the red zone. On the ensuing second down Laird would be hit causing him to leave the game with an injury, freshman quarterback Justin Moore would replace him. The Beavers defense held strong holding the Panthers to a field goal.

The Panthers field goal unit took the field only to have Balls field goal blocked by a surplus of Beaver defenders; the score would remain 17-7 and SCC would turn the ball over on downs.

With 24 seconds left in the third quarter Hicks would connect with sophomore wide receiver Ference Lang on a 53-yard touchdown, Southwards PAT was good putting the Beavers up 24-7. 51 seconds into the fourth quarter Hicks would connect with Trosin again for a 15-yard touchdown reception pushing the Beavers lead to 31-7. The Beavers offense was stagnant for the remainder of the game only scoring one more time on a 30-yard field goal hit by Southward with 5:59 left in the game.

“They just settled in and played, and we talked about making sure that we just stay within ourselves, we run to the football, and we tackle really well,” Haflich said.  “As we settled in our attention to detail got better.”

Hicks would end his day completing 15-21 passes for 232 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Trosin would have 5 receptions for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns, giving him 6 touchdowns in the first 2 games of the season and Lang would have 2 receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown.

“We had a good game-plan going into the game, and they pretty much ran what we thought they were going to run and we just executed,” Trosin said.

The Beavers (2-0) next game will be at home Saturday Sept. 21 versus Chabot College at 1 p.m.

ARC vs MPC

Saturday, September 6 2013

The No. 9 ranked Junior College in the nation, American River College, opened their 2013 campaign on the road at Monterey Peninsula College Saturday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.

The Beavers were looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to end the 2012 season versus San Francisco State Community College in the Northern Division Championship Game.

The Beavers opened the game kicking off to sophomore running back Don Carter who returned the ball to the 30-yard line.  After freshman quarterback Andrew Loudenback completed a third down pass to sophomore wide receiver Mitchell Collie for a first down the Lobos received multiple delay of game penalties, and found themselves trying to overcome 26 yards on third down.  The ARC defense held strong and forced the Lobos to punt.

The Beavers first offensive possession resulted in a punt from their own 25-yard line, but on the team’s second possession Sophomore Cameron Southward kicked a 35-yard field goal to put the team up 3-0 in the first quarter.

The next score for the Beavers came off of a 94-yard punt return from returning sophomore slot receiver Tyler Trosin to put ARC up 9-0 in the second quarter.  Southward successfully made the point after touchdown to increase the lead to 10, and the Beavers never looked back.

“I had a couple good blocks, they just opened it up for me and I just told them to open up a lane and I’ll find a way to make it into a touchdown,” Trosin said.

On the first play following Trosin’s touchdown, MPC’s offense found themselves opening their drive at their 32-yard line.  On the ensuing play the Lobos fumbled the ball which was recovered by sophomore defensive back Ethan Clark.

American Rivers defense finished the night with four interceptions, one fumble recovery, 8 sacks, negative 31 rushing yards and 13 tackles for losses in their first game together.

“A lot of pressure and reading their formations, there is a lot of different things that get into a quarterbacks head and our defensive line is getting a lot of pressure,” sophomore defensive lineman Ewing Simmons said.

ARC’s offense found its rhythm after Trosin’s punt return TD adding a 23-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Mike Hicks to sophomore wide receiver Dan Thomas.  Southward would kick a 23-yard field goal with 4:43 left on the clock and would add a 34-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining in the first half.

At halftime the Beavers led the Lobos, 23-0.

MPC would start the third quarter kicking the ball off to American River’s Trosin, who would take it 89 yards, for his second special teams’ touchdown of the game and would put his team up by 30 points.  Trosin’s presence was not only felt on special teams, but on offense as well as he caught a 7-yard pass, from freshman quarterback Jake Bist, giving him three touchdowns for the game.  Hicks and Bist would finish the night with two passing touchdowns, combined, for the Beavers.

With the score 36-0, freshman kicker Charlie Vue would add his second PAT, and before the game was over Vue would add his first field goal, from 21 yards, to give American River 40 points on the night.

A holding penalty on American River inside their own 10-yard line resulted in a safety, giving MPC their only two points of the night.

The Beavers would go on to win their season opener 40-2, and hope their success continues throughout the season with aspirations of a State Championship.

“It was a tremendous win for us, it’s always fun to win,” head coach Jerry Haflich said, “and when you create that many turnovers it helps.”

Their next game will be the home opener Saturday, Sept. 14 versus Sacramento City College at 1 p.m.

ARC WINS the Valley Conference Title
