Bio

Michael Morris was born in Redding, CA. and attended Enterprise High School where he participated in football, basketball, and track and field.  He also was involved in student government and was student body president.  Coach Morris attended Shasta College where he again participated in football and track and field.

Coach Morris transferred to CSU Sacramento where he majored in History with a double concentration in World History and U.S. History while minoring in Philosophy.  He received both his B.A. and teaching credential from Sac State and got his first teaching position at Rio Linda Jr. High School.  After teaching at Foothill High School and Martin Luther King Jr. Junior High School he moved to Rio Linda High School in 1991.  Coach Morris taught World History and was the Athletic Director at Rio Linda until he retired in June of 2022.  He served as the FVL representative to Sac-Joaquin Section Board of Managers, was a member of the Section’s Playoff Committee, and the Section’s Football Advisory Committee. Coach Morris received his master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University, Irvine.

His football coaching career began at San Juan High School as a freshmen assistant.  After spending his first year on the freshmen staff coaching line and calling the defense he was promoted to the junior varsity staff as line coach and defensive coordinator.  Coach Morris then was offered and accepted a position at Foothill High School as the assistant head coach and line coach.  He spent four years there until he became the head coach at Rio Linda.

Coach Morris was the head football coach at Rio Linda from 1991 – 2013.  In those 23 years the Knights were Section Champions in 2004, runners-up in 1998, made the playoffs 13 times, won 7 CVC titles, had an 86 – 30 – 1 CVC record and a 148 – 103 – 1 overall record.  Coach Morris was honored as CIF Model Coach (2013), “Michael D. Gebhardt Coaches Award” (2014), Sacramento Bee Coach of the Year (2004), National Football Foundation “Red Smith” Award (2005), and the Optimist All-Star North Coach (2007 and 2013). 

Coach Morris enjoys volunteering as the Head Coach for the Law Enforcement Team (the Hogs) for the annual Guns and Hoses Football Game (Pig Bowl) since 2011.

Coach Morris is entering his eighth season with the Beavers, six as the Running Backs Coach, and moved to coaching the Tight Ends last year.  He also has the responsibility as the Run Game Coordinator.   

Coach Morris married his wife Debbie in 1988 and they live in Elverta.  Michael and Debbie have two sons, Michael II and Matthew.  Coach Morris is an usher at his church, St. Lawrence in North Highlands.  Coach Morris enjoys playing with his grandson Brylen, playing golf, and reading.
