Beavers Able to Withstand Tough NCAA DIII Team, George Fox University

ARC-6                    George Fox University-0

Overall: 14-1       Conference: 7-0

The Beavers had the opportunity to test their level against one of the better teams in the Division III Northwest Conference, George Fox University (GFU). GFU made the trip down from Newburg, Oregon to take on the #1 NorCal JuCo ranked Beavers from ARC. From the beginning it was an intense and hard-fought match. The Bruins came out with an incredible level of energy and took two of the three doubles matches. At #1 Cody Duong/Tam Duong lost their first match of the season to the DIII #17 nationally ranked tandem of Alex Namba/Spencer Watanabe. At #2 Justin Barton/Eric De Romas missed out on several early break point opportunities, and found themselves down two breaks at 5-1. They earned a break back, but lost the final three games to the tough GFU pairing of Matt Biggi/Davin Lee for a final score of 8-2. At #3 Neville Cooper/Mikey Vizcarra caught fire early and never looked back, rolling to an 8-1 victory over the #3 GFU team of Jacob Farmer/Ryan Malinowski.

In the singles, the Beavers were able to weather the storm of energy that the Bruins brought early, and by the end of the first sets the Beavers were in control of most of the singles matches. In fact, the Beavers did not lose a set from #2-#6 singles. Cody Duong (#2) played a steady and thoughtful match to earn the 6-2, 6-1 victory. The most competitive match of the day was at #3, where Mikey Vizcarra won a first close set (6-4) and battled back from 5-1 down in the second set to seal the victory over tough GFU opponent, Matt Biggi, 7-5. Neville Cooper (#4), Eric De Romas (#5), and Andy Vang (#6) all won straight set matches that were one-sided on the scoreboard, but not on the court. "We were able to play well on the big points, and that's why some of those matches that were intense and looked very close ended up looking routine on paper. But, in fact, they were anything but routine." Explained ARC coach Bo Jabery-Madison. The lone loss on the day in singles for the Beavers was at #1, where DIII #18 nationally ranked Spencer Watanabe beat Tam Duong 6-1, 6-4. T. Duong battled back from 4-1 down in the second set to make it very competitive, but was unable to overcome the deficit against the extremely physical GFU #1.

On the whole it was a tremendous day for the Beavers and a much-needed competitive match. They will next compete in the individual Big 8 North conference championships, starting Thursday, April 6th at American River College.
