Beavers Dominate at the MJC Invitational

In their first tournament competition of the spring, the ARC Men’s tennis team performed exceptionally well and won the team event by a large margin. The tournament features nearly every NorCal men’s team and is formatted as a flighted event. Each player competes in a draw comprised of other players at the same ladder position of their respective team. In the singles, ARC was able to win 4 of the 6 flights. Gavin Sonntag (#1), Shane Timmons (#4), Tarang Sharma (#5), and Ty Maimer (#6) all won their flights. Enrique Silveira (#2) competed well, but fell to Foothill #2 David Budziwojski in an epic 3-set battle. Arjun Sivakumar (#3) reached the final of his draw, before falling to Foothill #3 Isaac Gutierrez 6-3, 7-5. Highlights from the singles included Sonntag winning a 3-hour marathon against Keisuke Ariga in the #1 Flight final, Shane Timmons winning a convincing final in the #4 Flight against Ethan Wardlow (FH) by the score of 6-2, 6-3, Tarang Sharma losing a combined 6 games in Flight 5 draw, and Ty Maimer losing only 5 games in his run to the Flight 6 title.

In the doubles the Beavers had even more success, winning each of the 3 flights without dropping a single set. In the #1 Flight Silveira/Sonntag defeated #4 seeded Castro/Coehlo from Fresno City 6-2, 6-2 in the final. Spencer Hill/Timmons beat 3rd seeded Santiago/Wardlow from Foothill 6-2, 6-4 in the title match in the #2 doubles draw. Maimer/Sivakumar rolled through the #3 draw up to the final where they won a close 2-set match 6-3, 6-4 to take the title.

The Beavers have now won 7 of the last 8 MJC Invitationals. They will next compete against the Sac State club team on Friday, 2/16 at 2:00p.
