Occidental Distance Carnival – Los Angeles

The American River men's distance runners and pole vaulters travelled to Los Angeles and didn't disappoint as the Beavers lit it up scoring personal records and season best from nearly every athlete. Sophomore Alan Quintero shaved over 4 seconds off this year's 800m time, and over 2 seconds off his lifetime best, clocking a 1:54.02. Steven Hill and Stephen Gibson both ran 1:57 in the 3rd heat. Matt Sangria went wire to wire in his heat of the 800m breaking the 2:00 barrier for the first time ever running 1:59.71. Conor Wells, Ross Walker and Gonzo Morales-Lomeli all used fantastic last laps to run big season bests in the 1500m (4:03.19, 4:05.36 and 4:04.76 respectively). Matt Morris ran a huge PR in the Steeplechase dropping his time from 10:05 to 9:47.97. After leading much of the 5000m, Abdul Hamid faded late but still held on to run 14:56. The 4th heat of the 5k had 4 Beavers shooting to all make their first trip under 16:00. They didn't disappoint with all 4 having huge PR's – Donnie Plazola 15:21.23, Ozzie Hassen 15:22.85, Brad Needles 15:29.39, and Anthony Sanchez 15:30.04. And finally the biggest drop of the night came from UC Santa Cruz transfer Joe Shanahan who dropped his PR from 16:31 to 15:52.82. The pole vaulters went 1-2-3-7 in the competition, but none of them had personal bests. Much of that can be attributed to the vault be canceled, reinstated, canceled and reinstated again.
