American River College men lead after 2 events

With the Multi-events completed two weeks ago, it was the 10,000m that was the only scoring event of the Trials portion of the NorCal Championships on a rainy Friday at Chabot College in Hayward. The Beavers of American River obviously liked the rain taking 28 of the 39 points available in the 10k. Overall champion was state leader Abdul Hamid of ARC in 31:43.51. Runner-up Donnie Plazola of ARC was 2nd at 31:46.61. Jorge Sanchez of Hartnell placed 3rd in 31:55.64. Ozzie Hassen of ARC was 4th at 32:07.39 and Javier Garcia of Hartnell was 5th at 32:18.56. The next two spots went to the Beavers with Brad Needles grabbing the last State Championships qualifying spot in 6th at 32:24.93 and first alternate Joe Shanahan was 7th at 32:36.05. The first 12 places in the race all went to either American River or Hartnell runners.

In running events contested as trials for next Saturday's finals, Donovan Wallace of Modesto led the 100m and 200m in 10.49 and 20.98. Sequoias Ohdel James led the 400m qualifiers in 47.06 – 5 runners from Sequoias made the finals. The 800m was led by state leader Gerardo Castro of CCSF in 1:53.46. Four runners from ARC and 2 from Chabot made the final. Adam Gonzalez of Sequoias led the 1500m qualifiers in 3:58.52 as 6 ARC runners made the finals. James Traylor of San Francisco led qualifiers in the high hurdles in 14.47 and Chris Green of Sequoias led the field in the intermediate hurdles at 53.41. Modesto led the way in the 4x100m relay in 40.93 and Diablo Valley led the long relay in 3:17.28.

In the field events, Austin Collier of American River led the long jumpers  at 23'8" as 4 of his teammates also qualified for the finals. Ryan Donahoe of Yuba led  two of his teammates into the finals at 15.47m.  Daniel Roberts led the way in the Discus and Hammer in 52.42m and 63.79m respectively.  Two teammates will join him in both events. Alvin Sung led San Mateo into the Javelin finals at 57.52m. He will be joined by 4 throwers from Siskiyous.

Saturday, May 14th will be the final day of competition for the NorCal Championships.
