2005-06 Summaries

December 3, 2005

ARC 2, Modesto 1                                     16-4-4 Overall                6-3-3 Conference

On the road at No. 3 seed Modesto, the seventh-seeded Beavers scored late to upset the Pirates and advance to the state Final Four in Fresno.  Modesto took a 1-0 lead into the second half after scoring early in the match on a goal by Sarah Mando.  But ARC stepped up in the final 45 minutes, turning in what head coach Paul Arellanes described as a “solid effort from everyone.”  The Beavers tied the contest at the 51-minute mark when Katie Hartman finished a deflected cross from Rachel Mathews.  In the next 20 minutes ARC had several close scoring opportunities, hitting the upright and cross bar a total of four times, but the team was unable to gain the lead.  Finally, in the 81st minute, Hartman again took a pass from Mathews and scored on a 25-yard shot that, ironically, hit the cross bar before settling into the net.  Keeper Danielle Collins continued her outstanding performances in the team’s playoff run.

ARC 1, De Anza 0                                      15-4-4 Overall                6-3-3 Conference

On the road again for the second round of the playoffs, the Beavers knocked off the No. 2 seed Dons, who were ranked second in the North and eighth in the country.  Hannah Burke scored the only goal of the match in the sixth minute of the first overtime by converting a cross from Rachel Mathews.  ARC had several chances in regulation play to score but was unable to capitalize.  Defensively, the play of April Cook, Whitney Lundberg, and Karly Huerta neutralized most of De Anza’s threats.  The Beavers dominated possession throughout the contest due to the outstanding play of midfielders Tiffany Prunty, Angie Leporini, Sarah Petlowany, Alexa Valencia, Katie Hartman, and Burke.  Goalie Danielle Collins made five saves in 120 minutes of play.

November 19, 2005

ARC 2, Sequoias 1 (OT)                             14-4-3 Overall                6-3-3 Conference

Hosting the Giants in the first round of the state playoffs, the seventh-seeded Beavers came from behind to win in overtime.  Mayra Garcia scored off a throw-in in the 11th minute, and the match remained a stalemate until the final five minutes of the contest. ARC’s Katie Hartman scored off a corner kick taken by Rachel Mathews to equalize.  In the first overtime Mathews scored again, this time from the top of the penalty box after winning the ball from a Sequoias defender.  Keeper Danielle Collins had seven saves on only eight shots on goal.

November 15, 2005

ARC 3, Cosumnes River 0                         13-4-3 Overall                6-3-3 Conference

In the conference finale, the Beavers picked up a convincing win to enter the playoffs on a strong note.  Hannah Burke scored twice on Rachel Mathews assists, and then Mathews picked up the final goal on an unassisted tally.  ARC finished second in conference play.

November 12, 2005

ARC 1, Feather River 1                              11-3-4 Overall               4-2-3 Conference

Playing their third game in five days, the Beavers scored late to gain a seemingly safe lead over the Golden Eagles.  ARC’s Hannah Burke converted a Tiffany Prunty pass in the 85th minute for the team’s only score.  The tally came on a free kick that Prunty played in for Burke to knock in on the back post.  Feather River, however, evened the score in the last moments of the game when a 40-yard free kick got lost in the sun by the ARC defenders, allowing a Golden Eagle to run in behind to head the ball in from close range.

November 10, 2005

Sacramento City 1, ARC 0                         12-4-3 Overall                5-3-3 Conference

The Panthers scored midway through the first half and held off the Beavers for the Big 7 win.  ARC increased the pressure on Sac City in the second half, but were unable to even the score against a tough Panther defense.

November 8, 2005

  ARC 4, Delta 0                                        12-3-3 Overall                5-2-3 Conference

The Beavers had several opportunities to score in the first half but were unable to capitalize until the second half en route to a 4-0 victory over the Mustangs.  ARC shook off a slow start to dominate the physical match.  Keeper Danielle Collins saved all three of Delta’s shots on goal as the Beaver defense controlled the game.  ARC got goals from Angie Leporini, Karly Huerta, Brina Jope, and Tiffany Prunty in the final 45 minutes of play.  April Cook and Hannah Burke contributed assists on the goals by Leporini and Jope.

ARC 3, Santa Rosa 3                                 11-3-3 Overall                 4-2-3 Conference

The Beavers’ Rachel Mathews took a Tiffany Prunty pass and converted it into a score at the 1:30 mark, a margin that stood until the half.  The Bear Cubs evened the score early in the second half, but ARC answered quickly, getting goals from Katie Hartman—on a pass from Mathews—and Brina Jope—assisted by Hartman.  Santa Rosa, however, scored two goals in the last 12 minutes to pull out the tie; the final tally came on the last kick of the contest, just sneaking in with seconds remaining.

Diablo Valley 1, ARC 0                              11-3-2 Overall               4-2-2 Conference

While the Beavers were able to pressure the Vikings the entire first half, they were unable to get the ball in the goal.  DVC tallied a goal on a 35-yard free kick at the 25-minute mark to post the shutout win.  Keeper Danielle Collins did have five saves to anchor a solid defensive effort.

October 25, 2005

ARC 2, Sierra 2                                         11-2-2 Overall                4-1-2 Conference

With the wind at their backs, the Beavers took a 2-0 lead 25 minutes into the match, but the Wolverines responded with a goal right before halftime. Sierra equalized 15 minutes from the end of the game.  Katie Hartman took a Rachel Mathews pass and scored for the game’s first goal, and nine minutes later Angie Leporini put one in unassisted.  Keeper Danielle Collins had six saves on eight shots on goal.  The ARC defense turned in another fine performance, led by Hartman, Whitney Lundberg, Tiffany Prunty, and Karly Huerta.

ARC 6, Cosumnes River 0                        11-2-1 Overall              4-1-1 Conference

The Beavers opened the onslaught on the Hawks with three goals in the first 15 minutes as Rachel Mathews, Brina Jope, and Katie Hartman each scored.  ARC received solid play from the entire squad, most notable Angie Leporini’s outstanding play at midfield.  The defense of Karly Huerta, Erin Piper, April Cook, and Whitney Lundberg limited CRC’s attack to very few looks on goalkeeper Danielle Collins.  On the offensive side, the final three goals were scored by Hartman, Mathews, and Tiffany Prunty, who also had two assists in the match.  Hartman, Leporini, Mathews, and Jope each tallied an assist.

October 18, 2005

  ARC 1, Sacramento City 0                    10-2-1 Overall                3-1-1 Conference

In a defensive struggle that went back and forth for 80 minutes, Brina Jope converted a Rachel Mathews pass into the only score of the game as the Beavers edged the Panthers.  Despite a sub-par effort, ARC found a way to win with its stellar defense, which was led by defender April Cook and keeper Danielle Collins, who save all four shots on goal.

October 14, 2005

ARC 5, Delta 1                                          9-2-1 Overall                  2-1-1 Conference

In a dominating performance, the Beavers controlled the conference match from the outset en route to the victory.  Rachel Mathews poured in four goals to lead the offense, and Brina Jope added the team’s fifth.  Five different players assisted on goals and consistent team play led Coach Paul Arellanes to describe the game as “a solid performance from everyone.”  The assists were registered by Katie Hartman, Angie Leporini, Sarah Petlowany, Kim Mathis, and Alexa Valencia.

October 7, 2005

Santa Rosa 4, ARC 2                                   8-2-1 Overall               1-1-1 Conference

The Beavers went on the road to always-tough Santa Rosa and dug themselves a hole by giving up three goals in the first 30 minutes, four in the first half.  Coach Paul Arellanes said that the match with the Bear Cubs was “our most disappointing effort and result to date,” and had hoped his squad would compete at a higher level.  ARC scored a goal in each half, the first one coming just before the break when Angie Leporini took a Karly Huerta pass and converted.  Brina Jope added another score late in the second half off an assist Katie Hartman.

October 4, 2005

ARC 4, Diablo Valley 1                              8-1-1 Overall                  1-0-1 Conference

In a physical battle, the Beavers used strong defensive performances from Amanda Morton, Whitney Lundberg, and Karly Huerta to pull away from the Vikings for the Big 7 win.  Brina Jope tallied her first goal of the game 12 minutes into the contest when she took a Rachel Mathews pass for the score.  She scored again early in the second half on a pass from Huerta.  Sarah Petlowany finished off the scoring with two goals in a six minute span.  Mathews assisted on the first of the pair, and Hannah Burke connected with Petlowany for the second.

September 30, 2005

ARC 1, Sierra 1                                       7-1-1 Overall                0-0-1 Conference

The Beavers opened Big 7 play with a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal game.  In an evenly-contested match, Rachel Mathews struck the first blow just before the half when she took a Katie Hartman pass and pushed it in for an ARC lead.  Goalie Danielle Collins turned back four of the six shots on goal the Wolverines managed before Sierra tied the score in the 82nd minute of the contest.

SEPTEMBER 23, 2005

ARC 7, West Hills 0                                7-1-0 Overall                0-0-0 Conference

The Beavers went on the road to dominate the Falcons in the non-conference match.  Goalies Danielle Collins and Chelsi Thompson split time in the box, turning back the only two shots on goal they both received.  Offensively, Brina Jope scored twice to lead the scoring.  Hannah Burke scored a goal and assisted on two others.  Rachel Mathews, Angie Leporini, Kim Mathis, and Karly Huerta each knocked in a score.  Leporini, Alexa Valencia, and Sarah Petlowany each registered assists.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2005

ARC 5, Foothill 0                                       6-1-0 Overall                  0-0-0 Conference

The Beavers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half, but the Owls did not have enough players finish the second half, so ARC notched an abbreviated victory.  Rachel Mathews had two goals in the game, both on passes from Sarah Petlowany.  Brina Jope, Angie Leporini, and Hannah Burke each scored once.  Burke and Amanda Morton also recorded assists in the match dominated by ARC.

SEPTEMBER 17, 2005

ARC 1, Lassen 0                                     5-1-0 Overall               0-0-0 Conference

Lassen came into the match 8-1-0 and ranked 10th in the country, but the Beavers sent the Cougars back to Susanville with a stunning upset.  Brina Jope took a Sarah Petlowany pass and scored at the 50-minute mark in the contest, and that was all the scoring that was needed.  The defense did not yield and goalie Danielle Collins notched another shutout.  While it was a tremendous team effort, coach Paul Arellanes noted the strong individual efforts turned in by Jope, Amanda Morton, Whitney Lundburg, Hannah Burke, and Karly Huerta.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2005

ARC 10, Shasta 0                                 4-1-0 Overall               0-0-0 Conference

The Beavers erupted against the Knights, putting up the lopsided victory.  Rachel Mathews and Sarah Petlowany each scored two goals while Erin Piper, Alexa Valencia, Angie Leporini, Kim Mathis, Tiffany Prunty, and Hannah Burke each scored.  The Beavers were just as dominant on the defensive side as goalies Chelsi Thompson and Danielle Collins split time in the box, each saving the only shot on goal taken on them.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2005

West Valley 3, ARC 1                          3-1-0 Overall               0-0-0 Conference

Playing on the road against a team that reached the Final Four last season, the Beavers held their own for the first 78 minutes, keeping the Vikings in check with a 1-1 score.  But over the final 12 minutes, West Valley tallied two scores to take the win.  Rachel Mathews kicked in ARC’s only score on a pass from Katie Hartman midway through the second half.  The Beavers welcomed back Karly Huerta, an All-America defender in 2004.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2005

ARC 2, Cabrillo 1                                 3-0-0 Overall               0-0-0 Conference

Brina Jope scored off a Sarah Petlowany pass in both halves of the non-conference win over the Seahawks.  The Beavers managed to stay undefeated despite only 13 healthy players competing on a hard and bumpy field.  “They had every excuse to lose, but found a way to win it,” said Coach Paul Arellanes.  Center mid Tiffany Prunty and defender Katie Hartman both turned in strong performances for ARC.  In the first start of her college career, goalie Chelsi Thompson recorded eight saves.

SEPTEMBER 2, 2005

ARC 3, De Anza 1                                   2-0-0 Overall                0-0-0 Conference

In a preseason schedule that includes the first four games against playoff teams from last season, the Beavers ran off two consecutive wins with a strong performance against the Dons.  Rachel Mathews started the scoring for the Beavers, who also got goals from Nicole Vinci and Sarah Petlowany, the last coming on an assist from Amanda Morton.  Keeper Danielle Collins played the entire game to anchor the defense.

AUGUST 31, 2005

ARC 6, Butte 0                                      0 1-0-0 Overall            0-0-0 Conference

Sarah Petlowany and Nicole Vinci each scored two goals as ARC dominated the Roadrunners in the season opener.  The Beavers’ defense allowed only one shot on goal and no corner kicks the entire match.  Angie Leporini and Brina Jope both punched in goals to round out the scoring.  Jope also picked up an assist, as did April Cook and Rachel Mathews.
