State championship tournament

November 17-18, 2007

Riverside 12, ARC 4

23-6-0 Overall

10-0-0 Conference  

In the State title game against the top-ranked and unbeaten Tigers, the Beavers trailed only 6-4 at halftime, but the Riverside pulled away in the final two periods to earn the crown.  ARC was the first team from Northern California to advance to the championship match since 1996.  Ali Pierce scored three of the team’s four goals, and Rochelle Yomogida added a goal to account ARC’s scoring.  Goalie Genevieve Darrah turned back 10 Riverside shots, capping an outstanding tournament for the ARC freshman.  Four of the Beavers’ six losses this season have been to the Tigers.

ARC 12, Long Beach City 10

23-5-0 Overall

10-0-0 Conference

The Beavers earned a shot at the State title with a strong second half against the defending State champion Vikings.  Trailing 5-4 at intermission, ARC poured in eight goals in the final two periods to edge Long Beach.  Ali Pierce and Anne Scott turned in outstanding performances in the semifinal matchup.  Pierce, a two-time All America led the Beavers with seven goals, four of which came in the second half when the team came from behind.  Scott finished with three goals, and Michelle Kaplan added two scores for ARC.

ARC 9, Chaffey 7

22-5-0 Overall

10-0-0 Conference

The Beavers, the top seed in the North, beat the Panthers for the second time this season.  ARC jumped out a quick 3-1 lead, but Chaffey scrambled its way back into the contest.  The Panthers tied the game with two minutes left in the first half, but the Beavers regained the lead with a goal just before the buzzer and never looked back.  Anne Scott led the team with three goals, Michelle Kaplan contributed two more, and Rochelle Yomogida, Ali Pierce, Brittney Grimmett, and Teresa Rojas each added a goal.


Norcal tournament 

November 9-10, 2007

After winning the Big 8 title the previous week, the Beavers turned in two solid performances at Foothill College in Los Altos to win the NorCal crown.  ARC topped Foothill 7-4 and then clipped Santa Rosa in the final, 12-10.  In the first game against the Owls, Ali Pierce led ARC with three goals and two steals.  Bree Summerfield added a pair of goals and two steals, and Brittney Grimmett and Michelle Kaplan rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.  Anne Scott added an assist and five steals in the win, and Rochelle Yomogida turned in two assists and four steals.  In the showdown with the Bear Cubs in the final, ARC had balanced scoring to take the win.  Grimmett led the team with three scores, and seasoned sophomores Pierce, Scott, and Yomogida each finished with two.  Pierce and Scott each had five steals.

In addition to the NorCal title, ARC earned the No. 1 seed in the North in this weekend’s State Tournament in Fresno.  The Beavers will take on the South’s No. 3 seed, Chaffey, at 9:20 am on Saturday and then play No. 2 Long Beach at 5:20.

ARC 13, Golden West 6

15-5 Overall 

4-0 Conference

The Beavers beat the Rustlers for the first time in school history, turning in what Coach Bethani Black called a “great team effort.”  Anne Scott and Ali Pierce took care of most of the scoring, each totaling five goals.  Brittany Grimmett, Michelle Kaplan, and Erica Himes each contributed one score to round out the scoring.

ARC 8, Chaffey 4

14-5 Overall 

4-0 Conference 

The Beavers bounced back with a solid game against the Panthers.  Tied at the half, ARC outscored Chaffey 6-2 in the final two periods to earn the win.  Ali Pierce led the team with three goals, Anne Scott had a pair, and Rochelle Yomogida, Brittany Grimmett, and Erica Himes each added one tally.  Scott led the team with three assists, and Pierce had two.

Riverside 14, ARC 4

13-5 Overall

4-0 Conference

Playing the top-ranked Tigers for the third time this season, the Beavers again fell short despite doing a much better job of countering Riverside’s counter.  Ali Pierce finished with two of the team’s four scores, with Anne Scott and Brittany Grimmett contributing one each.  Scott also had six steals in the contest, and Michelle Kaplan picked off three, but the defense was lackluster overall.  Three of ARC’s five losses have been to Riverside.

ARC 13, Mt. San Antonio 8

13-4 Overall 

4-0 Conference

In the first match in Long Beach, the Beavers topped the Mounties.  Ali Pierce finished with five goals, and Anne Scott added four scores and two steals to lead the offense.  Brittany Grimmett and Erica Himes each contributed two goals, and Rochelle Yomogida had three steals.  In goal, Lauren Merrill had blocks, and Katie Carlisle had two.

ARC 15, Sacramento City 5

12-4 Overall 

4-0 Conference 

The Beavers controlled the game from the outset and cruised to the Big 8 win.  ARC had a balanced attack, led by Erica Himes, who was able to get considerable work at center.  The freshman poured in a game-high four goals and picked up an assist.  Another freshman, Brittany Grimmett, finished with three scores.  Rochelle Yomogida and Lauren Merrill each contributed two goals, and Anne Scott, Ali Pierce, Teresa Rojas, and Kori Schutz each added a goal in the win.  Goalie Katie Carlisle led the defense with eight blocks.

October 5-6, 2007

Long Beach 10, ARC 9

11-4 Overall

3-0 Conference

Against the Vikings, the No. 2 team in the state, the Beavers stayed close the entire match, but could not hold on to the 6-5 lead they had at the half.  Ali Pierce poured in six goals and drew four ejections and a 5M.  ARC closed out the tough tournament with a strong performance.

11-3 Overall 

3-0 Conference

The Beavers received an education playing the Tigers, the top-ranked team in the state, according to Coach Bethani Black.  “The learned a great deal from the game—anticipating, countering the way through, a strong press, and how to pull together,” she said.  ARC had a tough first half, but rebounded to play a much better second half.  Ali Pierce led the team with three goals, and Anne Scott and Rochelle Yomogida each added a goal and two steals.  Two of ARC’s losses this season have come at the hands of the No. 1 Tigers.

ARC 10, Santa Ana 9

11-2 Overall 

3-0 Conference 

Anne Scott scored both overtime goals to lift the Beavers to the win over the Dons.  The win avenged a 6-5 loss to Santa Ana back on Sept. 15 at the Chaffey Tournament; ARC has won seven consecutive matches since that loss.  Scott finished the game with five goals and five steals while Rochelle Yomogida added three scores and three steals.  Brittany Grimmett added two goals, and Teresa Rojas scored once.

ARC 7, Mesa 3

10-2 Overall

3-0 Conference

The Beavers opened the tournament with a slow-paced game with the Thunderbirds that never got in synch.  Ali Pierce scored five times to lead the offense, with Anne Scott adding one goal.  Scott also picked up eight steals in the win.  Keeper Genevieve Darrah accounted for ARC’s other goal, making the most of the opportunity each goalie had to play the field.


October 4, 2007

ARC 10, Fresno City 5

9-2 Overall

3-0 Conference

Every player got playing time in the Big 8 win over the Rams.  Ali Pierce was outstanding at center, drawing seven kickouts, which turned into man up opportunities.  Anne Scott paced the offense with four scores and six steals.  Brittany Grimmett added three goals while Ali Pierce, Rochelle Yomogida, and Bre Summerfield each finished with one goal.  Yomogida and Pierce each collected three assists.  ARC jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.


October 3, 2007

ARC 17, Santa Rosa 10

8-2 Overall

2-0 Conference

The Beavers remained unbeaten in league play by downing the Bear Cubs.  Anne Scott again led a balanced scoring attack.  The sophomore scored five times and added seven steals; she also played a key role on defense by teaming with Rochelle Yomogida to shut down the center and prevent natural goals from 2 meters.  Ali Pierce drew three kick outs and one 5 meter as she created offense and set her team up to score.  Pierce finished with three goals and four steals.  Michelle Kaplan also contributed three goals while Teresa Rojas and Yomogida added two.  Bre Summerfield and Brittany Grimmett finished with one score.  Goalie Genevieve Darrah had three nice steals in addition to her solid play in the net.

ARC 19, Sierra 12

7-2 Overall

1-0 Conference

The Beavers offense was patient against the Wolverines, taking their time to put the ball away, and giving ARC a win in its Big 8 opener.  Ali Pierce and Anne Scott led the Beavers with five goals each, and Rochelle Yomogida added four.  Five other players contributed in the balanced offensive attack:  Bre Summerfield, Teresa Rojas, and Erica Himes each put in three scores, and Kori Schutz and Brittany Grimmett both scored once.  The ARC defense played well, but Coach Bethani Black noted work was needed on fouls—eleven times the team played a man down.


September 19, 2007

ARC 15, Cabrillo 8 

6-2 Overall

0-0 Conference

The Beavers won the second half of the doubleheader with the win over the Seahawks. ARC’s Anne Scott was seeing fours after finishing with four goals, four assists, and four steals.  Ali Pierce led all scorers with five goals to lead the offense, and Teresa Rojas finished with three. Michelle Kaplan, Kori Schutz, and Brittany Grimmett each added a goal to round out the scoring. Keepers Lauren Merrill and Katie Carlisle split the duties, totaling five saves.                                                                  

 ARC 14, Foothill 6

5-2 Overall

0-0 Conference

In the first match of the day, the Beavers flew past the Owls.  Anne Scott, Erica Himes, and Ali Pierce each finished with three goals to pace the offensive onslaught.  Teresa Rojas added two goals, and Kori Schutz, Michelle Kaplan, and Brittany Grimmett each contributed a score.  Kaplan also led the team in assists with two, and Scott picked off a season-high nine steals to frustrate Foothill.

Santa Ana 6, ARC 5

4-2 Overall

0-0 Conference 

The Beavers were hit with their second loss of the season when they were unable to capitalize on opportunities against the highly-ranked Dons.  The game was tightly contested throughout.  ARC led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter and 2-1 at the half.  Santa Ana tied it up in the third and edged the Beavers near the end of the contest, despite a strong effort by freshman keeper Genevieve Darrah, who picked up nine saves in the match.  Anne Scott led ARC with three goals while Ali Pierce added two scored and Brittany Grimmett one.  Rochelle Yomogida produced five steals and Grimmett added four.

ARC 12, Cerritos 7 

 4-1 Overall

0-0 Conference

Ali Pierce erupted for another six goals and added three steals against the Falcons to lead the Beavers to the win.  Rochelle Yomogida, Anne Scott, and Michelle Kaplan each finished with a pair of goals, and Bre Summerfield finished with one.  Yomogida and Scott each assisted on two scores while Scott and Brittany Grimmett both had three steals.

3-1 Overall 

0-0 Conference

The Beavers opened the tournament with a convincing win over the Thunderbirds.  Ali Pierce led the team with six scores and Anne Scott tossed in five.  Michelle Kaplan and Rochelle Yomogida rounded out the scoring, each adding a goal.  Yomogida also contributed three assists and three steals in the winning effort.  Scott led the team with six steals.  Keeper Katie Carlisle not only picked up two saves, she added three steals from goal.

In an annual exhibition, the Beavers ran past the returning players.  Alumni in attendance:  Jenny Ring, Des Flores, Casi Flores, Angela Williams, Courtney Moorhead, Leigha Sutton, Gerilyn Barton, Jusica Williams, Kaylynn Brown, Jessie Nissen, Anna Spivak, Angie Matheu, Tawni Covington, and Liz Abrams.

Overcoming a slow start, the Beavers opened the season with a win over the Vikings.  Anne Scott and Ali Pierce provided all the necessary scoring punch, tallying five goals apiece.  Erica Himes added two goals and Rochelle Yomogida one to round out the scoring for ARC.  Yomogida led the team with three assists.
