BEAVERS TAKE RUBBER MATCH FROM SIERRA 9-7
In another high scoring game American River College was able to outlast Sierra College 9-7 at Beaver Field on Friday. Sierra jumped on top early, scoring three times in the top of the first off of starter Ben Bowers (Folsom). Bowers hit the leadoff batter with the first pitch of the game. The second batter bunted and the throw to first was mishandled by Jose Vega (Highlands). The next batter singled in the pair of runs and he later scored on a ground out to short. The Beaver got a run back in the 2nd inning when 3B Luke Haney (Oak Ridge) doubled down the left field line scoring DH Rylan Pope (McClatchy) who scored from first. The Beavers took the lead for good in the 3rd inning, scoring 5 times off of a couple of Sierra errors. SS Bryce Sabatke (River City) led off the inning with a double, CF Dylan Westbrook (Oak Ridge) drove in two with a single and the Beavers took advantage of an error on a Lance Sabatke (River City) bunt and a fly ball to right off the bat of Haney that was dropped, allowing two runs to score. Sierra was not done fighting though, as they scored a run in the 5th and 6th innings, but the Beavers scored twice in the bottom of the 5th, again thanks to a couple of Sierra defensive mistakes. With ARC up 8-5 going into the 7th the Wolverines were able to chase Bowers after 6 2/3, scoring twice to make the game 8-7, but freshman RHP Zach Laduzinski (Whitney) came in and shut the door in the 7th. The Beavers got an insurance run in the 8th when Lance Sabatke reached on an error by Sierra's 3B which scored RF Brandon Pelechowicz (Yuba City) who had reached on his 3rd single of the day. Pelechowicz was 3x5 on the day with a pair of RBI and CF Dylan Westbrook was 3x4 also with a couple of RBI's.
The Beavers defense came up big on the day as well, turning four double plays, converting a line drive into a diving catch by Lance Sabatke up the middle who was able to tag out the Sierra runner who had been stealing on the pitch for an unassisted double play, and throwing out a runner stealing at second base.
The Beavers now go on their bye week from the Big 8 Conference where they will play Porterville College from the Central Valley Conference in a couple of non-conference games. The first will be Tuesday at Beaver Field, then Thursday in Porterville.
