Hawks Sweep of ARC to Open Big 8 Play

The 14th ranked Cosumnes River Hawks (CRC) opened the Big 8 Season with a sweep of American River College at CRC this afternoon.  In a series rescheduled due to a rainout over the weekend, the Hawks won the first game 4-0 and the second 9-4.

"It was a great way to open conference play," said head coach Kristy Schroeder. "The team played with a lot of energy.  We had some big home runs.  It was just a very fun day."

After three scoreless innings in game one, the Hawks posted three runs in the bottom of the fourth on back to back home runs by Emily Johnson and Sophia Ortiz. Johnson hit a two run shot scoring Kalie Toy and Ortiz's second homer of the year was a solo shot. Ortiz also drove in Seva Carter to push the lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Trinity Jordan earned her fourth win of the year giving up only three hits to the Beavers.

American River was in command of game two jumping out a to a 3-0 lead by virtue of a run in each of the first three innings. CRC started to claw back with Jordan's solo home run. However, the Hawks exploded for eight runs in the sixth to reclaim the lead. Towner had a two-RBI double to tie the game. Then, Jordan and Tamisha McBride both singled in runs for a 5-3 lead. Sarah Babby and Gabi Lipsky followed with two-RBI hits pushing the lead to 9-3. Tatiana Blass held the Beavers in check with nine strikeouts to post her third win.

Barring another rainout, CRC returns to action at Modesto Junior College on Saturday.
