The #24 American River College football program traveled to Shasta College on Saturday for their Nor-Cal Conference opener.
The Beavers began the scoring frenzy with a 1 yard touchdown run by Kenneth Lueth. Shasta would respond with a 32 yard touchdown pass from Eli Wehbey to Tyler Carey to make the score 7-6 Shasta as the end of the first quarter.
The Beavers would open up the second quarter with a 33 yard touchdown pass from Kenneth Lueth to Brandon Barthel and 37 yard field goal by Zach Schreiner to take a 16-7 lead. Shasta's Tyler Carey would score on a 12 yard touchdown run to cut the Beaver's lead to 16-14. However, the Beavers would respond with a 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Robert Freeman IV and a 45 yard field Zach Schreiner to extend the lead to 26-14.
Shasta would strike back with a 69 yard touchdown pass from Eli Wehbey to Tyler Carey before the end of the second quarter to cut the lead to 26-21.
The back and forth scoring would continue in the third quarter with the Beavers scoring on a 13 yard run by Tariq Parker, giving the Beavers a 34-21 lead. Shasta would score right back with a 30 yard pass from Eli Wehbey to Tyler Carey, cutting back into the lead 34-28. However, the Beavers would extend the lead again, 40-28, with a 14 yard touchdown run by Toure Hendrick before the end of the third quarter.
As the fourth quarter began Shasta would not go away scoring on a 3 yard touchdown pass from Eli Wehbey to J. Chavez, making the score 40-35. The Beavers would respond with a 1 yard run by Kenneth Lueth, giving the Beavers a 46-35 lead. However, as was seen all night, Shasta would not quit scoring on a Tyler Carey 7 yard touchdown run and cutting the Beavers lead to just 3 points, 46-43.
The Beavers would need to put together a strong drive to put Shasta away for good. They did so with an impressive 9 play 82 yard drive that was capped off with a 22 yard touchdown run by Kacie Riley to make the final score 53-43.
The Beavers improve to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Beavers will be back in action this Saturday, October 22nd, at home as they host Butte College at 1 PM.
