Coach Barnes begins his fifth year coaching the American River College Offensive Line unit known as the “Hammerheads".  The 2022 group had 4 true freshmen starting upfront for the Hammerheads.  It was baptism under fire for the young group who eventually adapted to the speed of college football and finished going undefeated in conference play and winning back to back NorCal Conference Championships.  The 2022 season had four hammerheads earn scholarships and transferred mid-year to play at the four year level.  Jaxon King (scholarship to Grambling University while Christopher Soderlund (scholarship to Colorado State University Pueblo), Darryl Johnson (scholarship to Pikeville University) and Anthony Verba (signed with Savannah State University). In addition to scholarship linemen, Ryan Cheesman earned All-NorCal conference as a freshman and was rated the top OL in the NorCal Conference.

The 2021 season had 3 Offensive Linemen earn All-League honors and had a total of 5 mid-year signees.  Sedrick Luke (Scholarship to University Texas El Paso), who earned All-NorCal twice, once in 2018 and again in 2021, in addition to being named All-NorCal, Luke earned 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-American and was named the NorCal Conference MVP.  Tommy Medellin (Scholarship to Lincoln University in Jefferson City) earned 1st Team All-NorCal and freshman Andrew Cokley (Scholarship to Central Washington) earned All-NorCal Honorable Mention. Zack Welch earned a scholarship to the University of Nevada while Tyler Geide earned a scholarship to Lincoln University in Jefferson City with teammate Tommy Medellin.

Coach Barnes spent the 2019 season at Rocklin High School where he coached the offensive line.  That year Rocklin HS led the Sierra Foothill League in rushing and the offensive line surrendered less than 1 sack a game.

In 2018 he coached two All-League Offensive Linemen and had three student-athletes who matriculated to the next level.  Trey Price, who was 1st Team All-NorCal and 1st Team All-State, started 11 games at left tackle and transferred to the University of Nevada Reno after one season.  Nick Steele, 1st Team All-NorCal, was the starting center and had multiple DII offers after the season.

Coach Barnes has over 20 years of coaching experience ranging from youth football to semi-pro football in Europe.  He began coaching at his alma-mater, Sacramento State, in 1993 and spent four seasons at four-year level coaching various positions that included the offensive line, defensive line and strength and conditioning.

Coach Barnes spent his playing days in Modesto where he played at Grace M. Davis HS where he earned All-Conference honors and was selected to the Central Valley Lion’s All-Star Game.  After high school he attended Modesto Jr. College where he played and earned a football scholarship to CSU, Sacramento.  While at Sac State Coach Barnes earned Division II All-American honors as well as being voted team captain, 2x Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman and was selected as the Co-Offensive Most Valuable Player.  He played at Sac State under the original “Hammerhead” Coach Neil Anderson and NFL coaches Greg Knapp and Clancey Barone.
