Men's Tennis - First match of the season a Success

Yonis Kodiji in doubles match

1/31/20
ARC-5 Holy Names-2
Overall: 1-0 Conference: 0-0

The Beavers started the year off well with a 5-2 victory over NCAA Division II opponent Holy Names University. The doubles point came down to the #1 position, where Stephen Guenard and Younes Kodiji earned a break to go up 4-3 and never looked back. They closed the match out on Guenard's serve in a love-game to clinch the doubles point. Nathan Gravitz and Jack Hall also won convincingly at #3 doubles to put the Beavers in position to win the doubles point and their match would prove to be the catalyst for the momentum the Beavers would take in to the singles.

In the singles, Gabe Kinder (#5) took his match in a 6-2, 6-1 route, and Stephen Guenard (#2) won a hard fought straight set match by the score of 6-4, 7-6(3) to put the Beavers one match away from clinching the dual team match. Finally, after serving for the match twice, Younes Kodiji (#1) broke his opponent to win his singles match and clinch the dual-team match for the Beavers. Micah Erwin (#4) would also outlast his opponent to put a punctuation mark on the victory for ARC.

It is the first time in five seasons that the Beavers have beaten the perennially solid, NCAA DII, Holy Names Hawks program. It could be a sign of great things to come on the season for ARC if they can continue to improve and compete well in the big matches. The Beavers will next play Sonoma State University, in Rohnert Park, on Friday, February 7th.
