Beavers Compete Against NCAA Division I Hornets in First Match Play of the Season

1/28/23

ARC-0                    Sac State-7

Overall: 0-1         Conference: 0-0

In their first dual match of the season, the Beavers took on NCAA Division I, and perennial Big Sky Conference powerhouse, the Sacramento State Hornets. ARC was shutout by the Hornets, but competed extremely well, especially at the top of the singles lineup. At #1 singles, Ravi Nelson battled back from a set and a break down to take the second set to a tiebreak, before falling by the final score of 6-2, 7-6(3) to another local Sacramento area standout, Jan Silva. It was a back and forth match, with each player doing a good job on serve, but Silva came up with back to back monster backhands in his final service game of the set, and then executed well with his primary weapon, the forehand , in the tiebreak to close out the match. At #2 singles, Lenny Lin also made the second set a back and forth battle against Sac State #2, Rudolph Aksnoks. After losing the first set 6-2, Lin was broken early in the second set. He quickly evened the set with a break of his own, and the players traded holds until Lin was broken at 4-4. Aksenoks held to close out the second set, and the match, 6-4. "To get matches like this early in the season is invaluable." Said coach Bo Jabery Madison. "It really shows us where we have to get better to be able to compete at the higher levels. If we can get to a point where we are competing with high-end NCAA Division I teams, it bodes well for us getting in to the later stages of the community college postseason." The Beavers will next play Menlo College, a strong NAIA four-year university program, on Friday, February 3rd at Menlo College.
