Beavers pull off another upset to win NorCal title

After a come from behind win to take the conference title two weeks ago, the Beavers went into the NorCal Championships with a tight battle ahead just to get on to the podium at the NorCals. Several colleges would be battling for 2nd (all predicted to score between 72 and 83) including ARC, Hartnell, Modesto, De Anza, Diablo Valley, and Merritt. Delta College of Stockton (predicted to score 115) was the clear leader with a 32 point advantage on paper. The Beavs would chip away at the deficit for more than two weeks. Micah Boughton, pegged for zero points in the Decathlon would take 5th to start the scoring with 4 points. In the 10k, Gulab Singh would take 2nd for a very hard fought 8 points. A few hiccups from Delta and the 32 point gap was now a 12 point gap heading in to the finals. The same 4 guys that won events at conference would become big players at NorCal. Chris Buck would win the Hammer and Discus and take 2nd in Shot (and Devin Hernandez would take 3rd in Shot and 5th in Hammer), Cristian Martinez won the 1500m and took 2nd in the 800m, Gulab Singh also added a 6th place in the 5000m, and Byron Chadwick had a huge season PR to take 2nd in the Steeplechase (Billy Groth would take 6th). A 5th and 7th place finish in the Long Jump by Josh Morrison and Isaak Delozier would just keep piling on the points. Both relays would take 7th place to add another 4 points to the total. Joey Brown added a 7th place 400 hurdle finish and a 5th place 110 HH finish (Micah Boughton would take 6th). Anthony Page would outkick a few guys to grab 8th in the 1500m for a point of his own. Every point would matter as the day went on and the next thing you know the Beavers total would be 102 – a full 20 points over the prediction. Delta’s total would fall 22 points short of the prediction, and the Beavers would be crowned NorCal Champions. As predicted, finish places after that would be tight as you can see below:

  1. American River 102
  2. Delta 93
  3. Merritt 73
  4. Diablo Valley 72
  5. Modesto 71
  6. De Anza 70.5
  7. Hartnell 66
  8. San Mateo 63
