The Beavers sank the Pirates in the second round of the NorCal regional playoffs.  After a scoreless first half, sophomore Jen Munro gave No. 3-seed ARC the lead in the 52nd minute. Freshman Brittney Cooper’s pass found Munro in the right side of the penalty box. Munro took a touch before hitting a ball into the far side of the goal just over the Modesto goalkeeper's finger tips.  ARC goalkeeper Leah Thomas made five saves to record the shutout.  Thomas and teammate Haley Hart have combined on 15 shutouts this season and have allowed only 11 goals all season.  The Beavers travel to Fresno City for a third-round match on Saturday, Dec. 1 to play the No. 2 seed Rams.

The Beavers opened the first round of the regional playoffs with a shutout of the Falcons.  ARC jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half with what Coach Paul Arellanes called a complete team effort.  Brittney Cooper scored the team’s first goal after Angie Lira fed Cooper a pass and Cooper spun her defender from 25 yards out, took a couple of touches, and then finished from 15 yards out.  Three minutes later Kat Carpenter crossed a ball from the right side that Laura Ramirez volleyed in from eight yards away.  In the second half, the Beavers finished off the scoring when Cooper set up Cassie Meissen for a 15-yard shot into the side netting.  With the win, ARC will host conference opponent Modesto—9-0 winners over Feather River in the first round—Nov. 20 at 2:00 pm.

The second goal was followed 10 minutes later when Kelly Melanson again headed a ball in off an assist from Courtney Bacchi.  The Beavers continued to apply pressure in the second half and picked up two more scores in the process. ARC got its third goal when Jessica Schulz’s crossed to Quita Darbison at the top of the penalty box. Darbison took her time and slotted the ball into the far post for the game’s third goal. The Beavers finished off their scoring when Kelly Melanson’s pass split the defense and Katharine Carpenter, with only the goalkeeper to beat, finished the into the far post.

It was Novoa’s first action since injuring her knee four weeks ago.  ARC managed to create several chances in the second half but couldn’t find the final touch on the Mustangs’ uneven playing surface.  The Beavers were led in goal by Haley Hart, who recorded her fifth shutout of the season, with help from defenders Fallon Nicholas, Amanda Taylor, Kelly Melanson, Jessica Reed, and Raquel Moon.

The Beavers fell to the Wolverines in the Big 8 contest.  Following a well-played and scoreless first half, Sierra scored midway into the second half from a long free kick that went over the outstretched arms of ARC keeper Leah Thomas. The Beavers thought they had tied the game with ten minutes to go when a shot on goal was deflected off the Sierra goalkeeper’s hands into the top of the net, but the officials ruled that the ball never crossed the line.

ARC 2, Cosumnes River 1

13-1-3 Overall

6-1-3 Conference

The Beavers, ranked first in NorCal and second in the state, edged a strong Hawk squad in the Big 8 match.  ARC opened the scoring early in the contest when Jen Munro overplayed a long ball into the penalty box.  The CRC keeper came out to collect the ball, but it bounced off her chest right to the feet of Brittney Cooper, who tapped the ball into the empty net from 10 yards out.  Just before the half, Tiffany Solorio received a pass from Courtney Bacchi, and Solorio fought off a CRC defender before turning and hitting a ball into the top far post corner from the top of the penalty box.  ARC had several other goal chances in the first half, but none closer than when Cassie Meissen beat her marker around the corner and played the ball across the box to a wide open Munro. Munro hit the ball first time, only to have the ball bounce off the upright and out of danger.  The Hawks made things very interesting when they scored in the 56th minute of the game.  CRC played a long ball to the back post where they had a player control the ball and shoot it in from six yards out.  A few minutes later CRC had a long shot go off the crossbar and rebound to a waiting forward, whose first time shot went wide.  ARC keeper Leah Thomas was forced into six saves on the day.

In a well-played Big 8 match, neither the Beavers nor the Pirates could convert on the scoring opportunities each had throughout the game.  ARC currently is ranked third in the state while Modesto sits at No. 10.  ARC’s closest chance came in the first half when Katharine Carpenter’s shot hit the upright and rolled back across the goal.  Goalkeeper Leah Thomas, who earned her sixth shutout of the year, turned in another outstanding effort.  Thomas teamed with defenders Nicholas Fallon, Jessica Reed, Kelli Melanson, and Raquel Moon to register the team’s 11th shutout of the year, and midfielders Lindsay Martinez, Angela Lira and Courtney Bacchi had outstanding games.

The Vikings dominated large segments of the game, the first loss of the season for the Beavers.  ARC fell out of first place in the Big 8, but remains in the top four in the state.  With Diablo Valley leading 1-0 at the end of an uninspired first half, ARC’s Jessica Reed tied up the score with about 25 minutes to go in the game. On a corner kick, Jen Munro played the ball in, the ball dropped to Reed’s feet, and she tapped it in from five yards out.  The Vikings scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to win going away.

Bacchi, with only the goalkeeper to beat, calmly headed the ball past her. The Beavers had ten shots while only allowing two to Delta. The Beavers remained unbeaten and unscored upon, but the offense was unable to produce any points to earn a win.  ARC played a closely contested game with the Hawks as neither team was able to create many clear cut scoring opportunities.  Felicia Novoa led ARC with four shots, one of which came in the first 15 minutes that forced the CRC keeper to make a diving save to tip the ball off the far post upright. The Beavers had a 6 to 1 edge in corner kicks, but they were unable to convert on any of their chances.  Others who played well for ARC were Amanda Taylor, who started at left back, and Cassie Meissen, who stepped in with a solid performance at center midfield.

ARC 3, Modesto 1

9-0-0 Overall

2-0-0 Conference

The Beavers controlled the first 60 minutes against the Pirates, but lost some focus and let the Big 8 hosts score with about five minutes left in the match.  Modesto’s Lucero Villasenor’s goal in the second half was only the second on ARC this season, and the first since Aug. 28 when Cabrillo punched one in on the Beavers’ dominating defense.  ARC, ranked No. 1 in the state, scored two times in the first half.  Courtney Bacchi scored off a Brittney Cooper pass in the 23rd minute to open the scoring, and about 12 minutes later Jen Munro picked up a loose ball on the left side of the penalty box, about 18 yards out and put it in the upper near post corner.  Tiffany Solorio rounded out the scoring when she took a feed from Dianna McGlothlin in the 53rd minute.  McGlothlin dribbled past her defender then played an early ball in behind the defense.  Solorio and the Modesto goalkeeper got to the ball at the same time, but the ball squirted out towards the goal where Solorio had an easy tap in from five yards out.

Cooper laid the ball off to Solorio, who played a ball across to Jen Munro on the back side and hit a first time shot into the top corner.  In the second half, Munro took a pass from Cassie Meissen, who played a ball through to the back side that left Munro with only the keeper to beat.  Felicia Novoa picked up ARC’s third tally on a weaving 40-yard run down the center of the field.  Katharine Carpenter followed with another score, this one off a Novoa assist.  Late in the second half Carpenter played a corner kick in to the top of the six yard box where Solorio calmly headed in to the near post area for the Beavers’ final score.  Leah Thomas played the entire 90 minutes in the goal, giving up no goals while making 4 saves

After opening up a slim two-goal lead at the half with three second-half scores, the Beavers stayed unbeaten and on top of the state rankings.  The ARC defense has not been scored on in September; against the Falcons keeper Haley Hart turned back all four of the shots on goal.  Offensively, the Beavers have demonstrated some balance.  Jessica Reed opened the scoring by converting a corner kick from Courtney Bacchi.  Later in the half, Bacchi received a ball from Dianna McGlothlin and, with her back to the goal and eight yards out, turned her defender and shot into the far corner.  In the second half, Angela Lira scored on an 18-yard shot off a back heel pass from Brittney Cooper.  Felicia Novoa completed a long run down the right side by slotting a ball near post from six yards out.  Cooper capped the scoring with a shot from 18 yards out.
