NICHOLS BIG WEEKEND LEADS BEAVERS TO SWEEP OVER HARTNELL

American River College extended their win streak to 4 games this weekend by taking a pair of games from Hartnell College in Salinas. Freshman (3B) Jackson Nichols was the hero on Friday as he belted two home runs, a solo shot in the 3rd inning and a 3 run shot to almost the same spot in left center in the top of the 4th inning. He finished the day with 4 RBI as the Beavers bats got the team out to an 11-4 lead in the 8th inning before Hartnell made it close by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Freshman 1B Lance Sabatke (River City) and sophomore RF Jonas Dyas (Folsom) each had three hits on the day with Dyas picking up a pair of RBI. Sophomore 2B Jayden Reynolds (Bella Vista) had a two-out, two run triple in the top of the 9th to help extend ARC's lead to 13-9 going into the final frame. Reynolds had 3 RBI on the day. Freshman CF/P Dylan Westbrook (Oak Ridge) picked up his first collegiate save by shutting the door in the 9th. It was his first outing on the mound this season as well.
Game 2 of the series was a little more frustrating as the Beavers took an early lead by scoring twice in the top of the 2nd. Sophomore RHP Joey Guarienti (Vista del Lago) pitched superbly, throwing 7 innings on just 85 pitches, 66 strikes and just 19 balls. Hartnell took the lead in the 5th thanks to a pair of unearned runs on what should have been an inning ending double play ball. Even with the outstanding pitching the Beavers couldn't quite crack the code to getting runs across the plate as they stranded 8 runners in scoring position. They finally took the lead in the top of the 8th on a balk by Hartnell's pitcher followed by a wild pitch to plate the second run. Freshman SS Bryce Sabatke (River City) singled in a run in the 9th to give the Beavers some breathing room. Jackson Nichols was 1x2 on the day with three walks and he came on to pitch the 8th and 9th innings, earning the save. He faced 7 batters in the two innings, striking out three.
The Beavers return home to play Feather River College on Monday at 2:00 pm in a makeup from January 31st and then will play Lassen College at home on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the make-up from February 6th.
