BEAVERS FINISH OFF PRE-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE WITH A WIN

American River College defeated Yuba College 12-5 on Friday at Beaver Field to secure the series against the 49ers and finish the pre-season slate with a record of 7-6. The Beavers do have three more non-conference games remaining, one of them scheduled, two are make-ups from rain outs earlier in the month. The Beavers got another strong pitching performance from sophomore RHP Joey Guarienti (Vista del Lago) who went 6 innings and only allowed the first two batters of the game to score. Guarienti, who is third in the BIG 8 Conference in strikeouts with 30 walked and hit the first two batters of the game. Both came around to score which gave Yuba a 2-0 lead. The Beavers answered right back, putting up a 3 spot in the bottom of the first with the big blow being an RBI triple by freshman C Rylan Pope (McClatchy) who then scored on an errant relay throw for what resembled a Little League home run. ARC doubled their score in the 2nd inning thanks to several wild pitches by Yuba's pitchers plus an RBI single from freshman 1B Lance Sabatke (River City) and a bases loaded walk by freshman DH Jackson Nichols (Valley Christian). Guarienti settled down after the rocky first inning, allowing just two more baserunners through the 5th inning. Nichols added a two run double in the 4th inning and Lance Sabatke tripled in his brother Bryce in the 5th. It was the Beavers league leading 8th triple of the season. They are currently 3rd in the state. The Beavers added a pair of runs in the 6th and one in the 7th to cap off their scoring. The score was 12-2 going into the 8th when freshman RHP Nathan Gahn (Bear Creek) entered the game and was uncharacteristically wild, as he walked his first two batter who both scored, as well as another who scored on an error to give Yuba five runs for the game. Freshman P/C Eli Campbell (Cordova) came on to finish the game and got some help from his catcher when sophomore Sam Garcia (Union Mine) threw out a runner attempting to steal second.
The Beavers next will begin BIG 8 Conference play with a three game series against San Joaquin Delta College beginning on Tuesday at Beaver Field at 2:00 p.m. The two teams will then travel down to the 209 to play in Stockton at Billy Hebert Field on Thursday at noon before returning home to finish the series on Friday at 2:00 pm at Beaver Field. ARC will then go to Solano College on Saturday for a non-conference make-up game at 1:00 pm. Game at Curtiss Brown Field.
