BEAVERS TAKE IT ON THE CHIN IN GAME 1 VS. DELTA

Tuesday's game between American River College and the visiting Delta College Mustangs looks like it was a blowout, but the game was much more competitive than the score. The Beavers got on top in the 3rd inning when freshman CF Dylan Westbrook (Oak Ridge) hit a deep fly to right field that popped out of the right fielders glove and over the fence for a home run. Delta tied the game up in the 4th after an errant pickoff throw by freshman RHP Ethan Palumbo (Antelope) allowed the runner to get to third and eventually score on a groundout to short. The 5th inning got ugly for the Beavers after Palumbo allowed a leadoff triple, he walked and hit the next two batters to load the bases. He then got a chopper hit back to him which could have been a double play but the ball tipped off his glove for an RBI single. The next batter walked, followed by a two run single to right. The Mustangs would tally 5 runs in the 5th to go up 6-1. After two scoreless innings by freshman LHP Aidan Lieu (Rio Americano) the game remained 6-1 after 7 innings. Freshman RHP Nathan Gahn (Bear Creek) came on in relief of Lieu but his command was shaky as he walked and hit the first two batters of the inning then allowed an RBI single to put Delta up 7-1. Sophomore RHP Aidan Nielsen (Casa Roble) came on in relief and allowed his first hit of the season in 6 innings of work, then got a double play ball which scored a run and then allowed another hit to put Delta up 9-1. The Mustangs added 4 in the 9th off of sophomore RHP Ben Hanson (Woodland) who was making his 2025 debut. The Beavers did gain back a couple of runs in the 9th when freshman LF Rylan Pope (McClatchy) doubled home a run and freshman SS Bryce Sabatke (River City) plated a run for the Beavers on a groundout to short.
Sophomore RF Jonas Dyas (Folsom) had two of the Beavers 5 hits on the day. The two teams will meet on Thursday at noon at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton for game 2 of the series.
