Beavers keep playoff hopes alive with 4 - 1 win over DVC

Sophomore LHP Matt Gunter (Bella Vista) stepped up with a big pitching performance on Tuesday, allowing just one run over 8 innings to pick up his 7th win of the season as American River College defeated Diablo Valley College 4-1 at Beaver Field. The win keeps alive the Beavers playoff hopes, as a sweep would give them a good chance to get in, a split in the last two games would make it difficult. DVC got their lone run in the 4th inning on a solo HR by the Vikings DH, Ian Hardman. It was the first ball hit out of Beaver Field this season. Gunter struck out 7 on the day. A.R.C. got all four runs in the 5th inning, with sophomore RF Alex Gaskin (Jesuit) lacing a 2 out single to left to score Bryan Babcock (Antelope) to tie the game at one. After CF Jimmy Lunardelli (Oakmont) walked, sophomore 1B Dalton deVries (Oakmont) lined a full count, 2 out single to right to score Gaskin and Lunardelli. deVries moved up to 2nd on the throw then took 3rd on a passed ball. Sophomore 3B Austin Call (Oakmont), then beat out an infield single to 3rd to score deVries. That was all the runs the Beavers would need, as sophomore closer Mike Marlar (Casa Roble) came on in the 9th to pick up his league leading 9th save of the year.
The two teams meet again on Thursday in Pleasant Hill at 2:30 for the 4th time this season.
