HOME OF THE AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS

Beavers drop close one to Santa Rosa

Beavers drop close one to Santa Rosa

Tuesdays have not been kind to the American River College baseball team in 2018, but today the Beavers started to turn the corner a bit.  Freshman LHP Sean Miller (Granite Bay) had his best outing of the year, throwing 7 innings and allowing just 2 earned runs to the 4th ranked Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs.  The defending BIG 8 Conference champs took a 3-0 lead in the 2ndafter Santa Rosa loaded the bases with no outs.  After a two-run single and a run scoring wild pitch Miller was able to pitch out of the inning and was never really in serious trouble again.  A.R.C. scored once in the bottom of the 2nd on a 2 out single to right by freshman 1B Lane Field (Whitney), but the potential second run was thrown out at the plate to end the threat.  The Beavers would come right back in the 3rd inning and tie the score though as CF BJ Baker (Ponderosa) and C Nick Huddlestun (Rocklin) delivered back-to-back two out RBI singles.  The score remained 3-3 until the 8th when Santa Rosa got a two out RBI single just out of the reach of LF Blake Spencer's (Rio Americano) glove.  A.R.C. sophomore 3B Will Floyd (Rocklin) doubled to lead off the bottom of the 8th but BJ Baker could not get a bunt down to move him to 3rd.  Freshman Justin Borchard (Woodland) pinch-hit and lined out to left as the Santa Rosa LF made a sliding catch towards the foul line.  Sophomore RF Justin Bejarano (Elk Grove) then singled to left but was shot down at the plate on a very close play.  Sophomore RHP Freddy May (Folsom) worked his way through the 9thinning in which the Beavers defense made a couple of miscues, but were bailed out by May.  A.R.C. again threatened in the 9th as Lane Field singled with one out, his 3rd hit of the day.  After Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) popped out DH Ray Henry (Colfax) singled up the middle to put Field in scoring position.  LF Blake Spencer then hit a sharp line drive to left and the left fielder made another sliding catch to end the game on what was a very close play on whether the ball hit the ground or not.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Santa Rosa on Thursday, but the incoming storm may require the game to be moved.
